Actually that's the catalyser. It was added when the car was re-imported from the states about 12 years ago. Makes me pay less taxes and gives me a better feeling regarding pollution (Kyoto!). But you're so right. 3 to 4 inches makes you approach any kind of obstacles rather cautious.....
