I believe the 2.4 came out in '90 or so. I've never seen any older than that.
Physically, the 2.4 fits the same space as a 1.9. But everything is in actuality different.

Different block
Different crank
Different rods
Different pistons
Different head
Different EFI system

The biggest difficulty is the fact that between the raised inlet ports and the large intake manifold, it will not fit (the EFI that is) under the hood of any US-market Opels unless you install a substantial hood scoop.

Hi Bob,
I am familiar with the many differences between the 1.9 and 2.4 block but I was curious to know if there were performance manufacturing differences between the 2.4 liter blocks (amongst themselves). Again, regarding internal parts, performance, quality, forgings vs. casting, ECM, FI system, etc.

I haven't heard of one year 2.4 liter being superior to another year, but I do not know. I also don't know if some of the 2.4s put out more HP stock than other years. And, what years are these, if there are 2.4 liter years that are more desireable.
All the 2.4's have forged 8-counterweight cranks, forged rods, cast pistons with floating 22mm pins, and chrome-stemmed valves. To my knowledge, they are all listed as 125-128 PS (One PS is about .98 HP), the differences most likely from the exhaust system variables from car model to car model. I know these were used as the baseline engine in the Omega, as well as one option for the Frontera. I don't know of any other models they were used in, but as the engine options vary greatly from country to country, it stands to reason that it may have been used in other models as well.

I do believe the later engines have an improved ECU, utilizing Bosch Motronic. Not sure if the early ones do or not.
