YYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The 2012 Opel Nationals in GA is now in the history books and what an event. First of all, thanks go out the all of the GA Opelers who made it happen , and VERY special thanks to Steve Goines who went the extra mile, above and beyond to add special touches to make this one to remember. Weather for Saturday was no less then AWESOME. Sun, a bit of a breeze, a hint of the mountain coolness, but, it could not have been any better. Friday was overcast, but, still very nice. Started off with welcoming those who could get there on Friday, Gil (of Opel GT Source) and Rodney Killingsworth (Killer_TX_GT) came from CA and TX, and there was dinner at a local steak house/buffet. Food was excellent and the atmosphere was fantastic with getting back up to speed with firends. Friday night was the "brench racing" and beer session and it lasted a while as there was much to talk about. The Friday night BR was "highlighted" by me getting a "Life time achievement award from fellow Opeler Dieter (heimue) when I get it out of the back of the car, I'll post a picture or two where it can be seen in the daylight, but, those whos did take pictures that moment, please post them here. Saturday started with breakfest at a local diner, and then we mounted up for the Mountain Run. Steve arranged for the local police to block off a few key intersections for us, as a pack, to leave Blairsville, and start out run. Needless to say, we cause quite a stir running through the north GA mountains. As posted earlier, we planned a few stops to allow a couple of members to go on ahead and set up for video passes. These will be made into a video with a link to it so all can see. Dieter risked life and limb on one video of his, kneeling in the middle of on coming traffic to get one of his excellent videos. We circled back around to take a rest stop in Cleveland, GA and to pick up our newest GA members Dan (Drinkman) and his wife Pam (One Fine GT) in the newly aquired purple GT from Wayne Torman. We did an impromptu car show in the parking lot and attracted quite a crowd. The we headed off to Unicoi State Park Lodge for lunch. They have an EXCELLENT buffet open to the public. Then it was off to Brasstown Bald, highest point in GA for another rest stop. We stopped everyone in their tracks to see so many little German cars come roaring into the parking lot. All along the way we had people stopping and staring as we passed, even noticed one older gentleman out on his riding mower, cutting his grass and he stopped to watch us all pass. Ending the Mountain Run, we went back to the tech school in Blairsville, and used their parking lot for the "show". We caused such a stir in the area, that a curious military chopper did a couple of passes right over us to see what was the commotion. REALLY!! It was so awesome. Another one of Steve's touches was to have a video photographer friend come by and video all the cars and a lot of the drivers for a show he puts on locally and he will be combining this into a future DVD for us along with a DVD of just the pictures, so all who took pictures and video, PLEASE, PLEASE get with Steve and get them to him. We went back to the Holiday Inn for a cartered BBQ dinner that was very good. There was a group shot made in front of the motel, and then a special award was given to Gil for his untiring help in keeping our Opels on the road. Then there was a special "gag" award given to Bill Hoffman for the "Longest Distance Traveled in an Opel" to get to the Nationals. Anyone who took pictures of the award, PLEASE send me one, as well as one to Steve for the DVD. Then came the auction, some very nice parts were auctioned off, Gil brought 4 $25 gift certificates for purchases at Opel GT Source, as well as a few goodies. The highlight was my wife's afghan, it was auctioned off for $200 to Keith (opelspyder), thank you Keith!!!. Keith also went the extra mile to help sell a GT gas cap that was missing a few pieces and a key. He offered if some one bought the cap for $50, he would repair the cap, and cut a key for it, on the spot, all for free, thus doubling the buyer's cap value to $100 if they chose to turn around and sell it. The auction was probably the most funny one yet!! Then we got back down to bench racing again. Now, the torch/baton has been passed to John Dickerson (opeljohn) for the 2013 Nationals in Springfield, IL. This was a interesting meet for me, in that, instead of being one of the first to have to leave, and drive all day to get back home, I got to leasurely sleep in, and leave later in the morning and get back home in a short time, in fact stopped to eat lunch at a Cracker Barrel near Buford, GA and even had a couple come up and talk to us for a few minutes about the Sportwagon. I told them of the meet we just came from. All the Opels run perfectly, coming to the event and during the event. I'm waiting to hear how everyone made it back. My wife and I made it back home at 2 pm at a leasurely pace. I had a GREAT time and got to meet a lot of old friends, and meet new ones. I had a great time and look for to possibly going to the 2013 Nationals. I'll post some pictures as well as send all to Steve later. Thank all who came!!!!
