I recently bought a 1969 Opel GT. It drives decently, but overall it's in pretty rough shape.

In any case, it has a 5-speed manual transmission. The person who sold it to me told me that it didn't go in reverse and showed me that when you try to pull the shifter back from 5th gear, it won't go; it feels like something is in the way.

It has been brought to my attention that the reverse gear is actually in a different place however, though I don't know exactly where.

Would someone be so kind as to provide some sort of diagram for me? Yeah, I know I sound pretty pathetic for asking something like this, I would really like to be able to start going in reverse.

Also, someone mentioned some kind of ring or something you had to pull on in order to get the shifter in to the reverse position. Can anyone verify this?

I'd really appreciate any help. Again, I feel pretty dumb for asking this question, sorry.

Thank you very much.

Getrag shift pattern

OK, Getrag doesn't have a reverse lockout per se, just a heavy spring that resists engaging reverse accidentally. Here's the 5-speed pattern:

Rob,

Most manuals have a lockout for reverse. You will have to pullup on the lockout to get it into reverse. If the 5 speed was not instaled correctly you may not have a lockout provided.

All of the Opel GT did not come with 5 speeds so you have one that somebody installed after it came from the factory.

Depending on the type of 5 speed reverse could be directly under 5th gear with a lockout blocking you or it could be over at 1st (over and up) with the lockout blocking you.

I am going from memory so I may be wrong on the placement but I am sure of the lockout. That is why you feel something blocking you.

The reverse on my 5 speed getrag in my GT (which is probably what you have) has resistance via a spring(that was correctly stated above), so I have to put a little extra force to get it in to reverse (which tekenaar correctly shows the pattern 2 msg's before me)

i.e move the shifter to the far left while it's in nuetral and push fwd. Thats reverse.

I think what happened is your getting info about the 4 speed (the coller you pullup for reverse) and info about the 5-speed at the same time.

Guys, I may be throwing garbage in the mix here, but to clarify, specifically on my T-5, there is no physical lockout just extra spring pressure, and my reverse is directly below 5th gear. Sorry if this confuses anyone.

i have a T5 trans in my S10, and it has no lockout whatso ever, not even extra spring pressure. if your not completely stopped, it just will not let you in reverse without gridning the gears.
