Opel Flip Ashtray

Susselbeck ash tray with flip top. 24.99 Euros. You might have some luck getting this part. I got an order from them one time, and have been ignored on two pretty pricy orders. Never can tell. Anyway they have a check out on line order system, you just never know if they got your message, and if they did, you don't know if your going to get what you ordered. They don't do much in the way of communication. You might want to give Gil a call, he has all kinds of stuff that is not listed in the catalogues.

I had my shifter plate recoverd by Just Dashes, and had them take the place for the ashtray out when they recovered the plate. I don't smoke any more so I didn't need it anyway.

Just checked the link, it takes you to the main page, just click on the GT gas cap, click on the British flag, then choose interior furnishings, then center consoles, scroll down to the ashtray. Good Luck

BOZKM;
I have one, and it's in real good shape, even the padded top is still good. PM me your address and I get it out on UPS Monday.

What was the price for Just Dashes to recover/ rebuild shifter console?
Heard the price is approx. $200.

If anybody finds another 69 to 70 flip-up ashtray in good shape, please let me know. Bid twice on eBay but lost.

FWIW
My bigger, sliding door style (which is the later style, I believe post '70 and therefore wrong for my car, not that I care) had some paint missing, it looked like someone had redone it once before as it had faint brush marks in it. I decided to repaint. I was looking at either sanding down the chipped areas to feather in new paint or strip. I stripped. Underneath is very highly polished steel may even be chrome. Wonder if these trays were shared with other models? Where they were perhaps left shiny?, and painted for GTs, explaining why paint seems to fail on these? Just wondering out loud. I've polished mine to the point where I think I'll leave it shiny, provided the sun doesn't catch it just right and blind me.
PS be careful with stripper, I didn't realize the door handle was plastic and the stripper melted it a bit.
I've seen shiny ones before so I can only assume other's have gone the polish route too. That or I'm thinking of the flip-ups with chrome edging.

I think black looks better. Can this sliding style tray be successfully taken apart (tabs on bottom bent) with reasonable expectations of getting it back together decently? Can't paint it nice while it's in one piece. BTW, originally was it a matte finish? glossy or flat?

After ashtrays are old, color appears to be flat black. Can't remember OEM Factory Color? I tend to prefer semi-gloss black; full gloss black reflects all paint defects. I have had good luck with Valspar, oil base, spray enamel. Found Valspar spray paint at local lumber yard, instead of Home Depot. Lowes might stock Valspar spray, rattle can.

Still can't get over how easily it cleaned up to a nearly chrome finish. Now I have to scuff it up to paint it, so much attention lavished on a piece of equipment that'll never get used. Well, maybe I'll a smoke again someday.

that's a great idea, I'll look at generic cup holders and see what if any can be rigged up to go through the ash try, there's some depth there...heated for sure -naturally, now a chilled version.......probably not:ugh:

Ash Tray Vent

Perhaps it's time we develop method & materials to convert that ashtray area to a chilled/heated cup holder. Or a hidden sealed garage door opener. Lockable wallet compartment?
For the price refurbished ash trays sell on ebay, they should be gold bullion.

I like the chilled/ heated cup holder on new Chryslers. Bought 12v cooler that has sensor in harness that will shut cooler OFF, if voltage drops to (11) volts. Only use 12v cooler once in awhile.

One Opel owners installed a 12v blower from boat supply, and routed hose to ash tray hole for additional ventilation. The numerous twists and bends in hose decreased blower velocity, yet still provided some additional, interior air flow. Thought of 12 volt fan at foot air vents, but concerned that I would break fans due to limited space. Cherish those GT Owners' with AIR!

What I've been using is the kind you hang from the window, flap slips between the glass and the sill. I put it on the passenger side and it rests against the the panic handle on the door. Works okay so long as I'm alone. Must be something better though.

I bought a "universal" cup holder at Target that mounts with screws (it even says it is a "European Cup Holder" so it must be compatible right? :lmao:). Anyway, the only place I can think of to mount it where it would fit is on the rear deck just behind the parking brake console between the seats. However, I don't think that will look very nice and it wouldn't be very convenient.
