I may have found someone to do the front bumper rubber (74-75) and the 73-75 vent covers.

I can't find my good vent covers though, anyone have a pair they could loan to do the molds with.

Also investigating making the molds work for both the Manta and Ascona.

Should have prices shortly. Could I get a count of how many WILL buy them when available. It will make a drastic effect on the overall price.

Charles,

I have an NOS Right Hand Side (Passenger) 73-75 Manta (57-57R) RR Qtr vent I could send you. (73-75 (57-57R) from Ch. #9778369 ,Part #1 83 883)

I also have an NOS 71-72 (#17 52 802) Rubber Bumper Guard that fit Rear 57-57R ( Manta) and Front & Rear 51-53-54 models if you are interested in reproducing that.

I found that the front 80% of the Manta rubber and the Ascona rubber are the same. So only a small modification needs to be made to a mold to make both. So hopefully the front rubber will be both Manta and Ascona.

Future Needs

Charles - At the moment I have one spare set of 74/75 front bumper rubbers for Ascona...and my Manta rubber is in good shape. That being said...I'm certain I'll have a need for them in the future. I didn't want to vote as having an immediate need but I wanted to encourage you to go for it! I know that "future needs" don't pay the bills but perhaps you might add another question to the poll for those who don't need them now but will purchase them in the near future. Just a thought. -SD

Charles,

Yes, I would buy a new front bumper rubber for my '75 SportWagon, or a complete set, if it wasn't TOO much. And I also need a new front windshield gasket. Do you still stock those, or can they be obtained?

I don't have window gaskets right now.

Give it two weeks or so and I will be putting together my much delayed order to europe (Thanks IRS for dragging thier feet..)

As for the Bumper rubber, looks like I found someone to hit my target.

Got a few problems...

1) If I order 30 sets he will not charge for the mold.

2) If I don't the molds are $250 a side. Which either a collection plate can be handed around to get them made OR I add it to the price.

3) I may have to sacrifice a NOS set of Manta rubber I have ($375 off ebay 3 years or so ago).

So... since I can't get 30 orders. I could use some help on the mold front. He is pretty sure he can do the mold for both the Ascona AND the Manta in one mold that can be modified depending on the order.

Also it will be a two piece part. You will install the bumper rubber vertical and then install the bumper guard on top of it. The difference in price is extreme between that and doing it as a single piece. Knowing the quality of his work I doubt anyone would notice the hairline gap at the back of the bumperette. Nor do I think any Manta owner will care.

Also the vents will also be done at the $50 a set cost or so. He is still looking into that and I am still trying to find a good set to mold. I have a OK used one for the passenger side, a nice driver side one is what I really need.

molds

Charles;
If the molds were actually purchased, is this something that we can do as we need them? Also, these mlds, are they the two piece or one piece?

The molds will be two piece. The Bumperette and the vertical piece are seperate. BUt will "lock" into each other.

Ok, so how long before we have to decide on purchase? If we have enough people to break the price ($500) down to something several people can manage (in other words, several people would own the molds, collectively) what would be the possibility of that?

As long as it takes.. I don't mind others having rights to the molds. But the molds are only good for about 50 sets.

Cost of the guards themselves should be in the $60-$75 range a side.

I am sending the guy my guards now (and Gary's Ascona one), to give me a more accurate price.

Update

Got quote on the 73-75 Vent covers.

$50 will be for a set, if I can get 10 or more orders I can drop the price $6 to $44 a set. If we get 20 or more orders I can drop the price to $40 a set. Does not include shipping.

They will be "improved" the plastic tits that go into the body will be replaced with bolts, so they won't rip out any more.

He is going to get me a price on doing the front rubber guards as well. He has recieved them and it looks like he will do it as a one piece mold like the original. Only will replace the clips and holes with studs.

I haven't looked yet....is there access to the inside of the 'C' pillar to put nuts on the bolts?......or are they still going to be a push fit?

Nope, early Manta uses one type, late Manta another. The Asconas had an early and late type too, and they are both different from the Manta.

No.. but these will be equally (or "slightly" larger sized than the plastic tit, with a fine machine thread to act as a grip to the plastic bell. Thats the idea anyway.
