Chroming Costs

4260 Views 36 Replies 16 Participants Last post by  jlthunder
I found a chroming shop in Atlanta and they quoted me prices to re-chrome my bumpers on my GT. They said the could do the front bumper for $206, the rear bumpers for $175 each and the bumperettes for $60 each. That would come to $796. The guy said he was quoting me on the "high end" because he had not seen them in person yet.
Do you think these prices are reasonable? Gene... Do you know anything about www.chrome-atlanta.com ?

Roy;
I have not heard, nor dealt with them, but, this I can do, I can take them a bumper or two and that way they can get a definite look at what you're talking about. According to their address, they're up by Rick. Rick you have a front and one rear bumper you can run by these guys?

How many do you want?? Yes I can check them out. I will take both a front bumber and back. I can do that tomarrow on my way home from work.
Chroming Cost

Roy, that does sound pretty high. There is a place in tri-city area of TN called Tri-city plating, they might be a little better. I have a guy local that does my small bumpers and chrome real cheap, but cannot do a long bumper. He does a lot of the plating for Harley Davidson, so doesn't need a lot of big tanks

I just called him. He explained that the price he quoted was high, but he would be able to get a better price when he sees one up close. He did ask if the bumber currently fits on the GT correctly (I said yes).

I also explained to him that this was not the bumber that he would be chroming but it would be one just like it. He said that was not any trouble.

I made arrangements to drop the bumbers off tomarrow morning on my way to work, so stay tune!!
Rick, see if he will do a quantity discount. If so, I've got 2 front bumpers I may have done. One for my car and the other to sell on ebay for afterwards to help finance the car restoration. Both of mine are in great condition, but just need some extra shine to them.

Roy, I just bought two rears bumpers on ebay that were in much better shape than mine and when I got them I thought that they were in such good shape that I wasnt going to pay to have them rechromed. They came with the bumperettes and since I am not going to use the bumperettes on my car, I'd be willing to part with them for a fair price. If you're interested, Ill take some digital pics this evening and send them to you. Might save you a bit of money if they are acceptable to you.
That is in the ball park of the bumpers that I had done for my Triumph, Chroming is a VERY nasty process, now that the EPA has gotten their hands into the mix it is very costly. I had my car done about 3 years ago and the prices where about 5% lower then what you quoted. This is one area that you do not want to go cheap on. You want the chrome to stay on the bumper, too many people take short cuts on this kind of thing.

I will check.

I have (I think) 3 front bumpers and unknowen number of back bumpers. This guy sounds like he knows what he is doing and he also knows some folks that will do some body work to restore some cars...I am about at that place so I will talk to him about that also.

??? What are you doing? You have a wireless laptop and are surfing Opelgt.com while you are driving?
Benncojr... Let me know what you find out. I really appreciate you checking on the place. These guys put a "flyer" in my GT at the Charlotte AutoFair this past weekend so I thought I would check them out. Heck, if they can do the chroming cheaper than what he quoted me, that would be even better. But, of course, I want a good job, even if I have to pay a little more.
The bumpers I have are in great shape. They just need to be re-chromed. The bumperettes have some pitting but that should not be a problem.
Oh, if you don't mind, ask them what there "turn around" time is. It seems some members have experienced problems with the amount of time it takes to get things re-chromed. I did mention that to him but in his e-mail back to me, he didn't respond to that.
Dallas, What is the name and/or web site of the chromers you have used in Tennessee? Won't hurt to check them out, too!

Ops my bad, about to that place on restoring the GT to have body work done. I would be in trouble if I did web surfing and drive in Atlanta traffice at the same time.

Roy, no trouble at all. I will ask him about turnaround time also.

The list of questions are:
1. Cost
2. Group discount
3. Turn around time
4. Any referances (I put that one in)

Anything else??
I think those four questions are fair. Let us know what you find out. Oh, maybe ask him the best way to ship the bumpers to him. UPS, FedEx, etc.?
I found a place in Cincinnati, Ohio (they ship the work out), that did my front bumper (GT) for $200, and the complete rear + an additional set of bumperettes for $348. Turn around time is 4 - 6 weeks. HTH :)
What was the quality of their work in Cincinnati? Did that include straightening if needed?
I haven't done my bumper yet but I had my valve cover, thermo housing, elbow, hood rod,and hood latch done for $100 here in Utah.I was quoted $120 on my front bumper. So far everthing looks great.
The front bumper looks great - the rear bumper & bumperettes is work in progress. I'll post pics when they return.
OK...I just got back from droping off Opel parts with this person (boy is he a talker).

I droped off the following

Front bumber with front bumberets (Gaurds)
Right back bumper
Left back bumper
2 left back bumperets (one in bad shape and one in good shape)
2 right back bumperets (one in bad shape and one in good shape)
and a Stock air snorkle

He will give me a answer on the price on each individual part in a day or two.

As far a a group discount the best he can do is 10% if you supply both a front and back bumber.

Turn around time is 2 to 4 weeks (based on the workload)

Shipping he uses UPS but he also uses DHL and Avery. With Avery we mayby able to get a discount, we would have to check to see if "Atlanta Bumbers Inc." is on their list of discounts.

The owner's Name is Mack McElyea. I looked at some of his work in the shop and was very impressed. He appears to be a straight shooter and will give us a fair price, for great quality!

On small items he has to price them out on an individual basis (ie door handles). I gave him the snorkel just to see how much it would be for my own knowledge. He is an old motorcycle rider and drag racer so he knows a lot of the stories. In the late 60's he worked on Don Garlets "Swamp Rat V" and had some photos of him working on the car.

We will see how it goes....

10% for front and back?? What about if I dont need the backs and I give him 2 fronts?
I think that will work also, if not I have extra back ends that could be done. The work that I saw was "Car Show" quaility!!
AARRRRRRRRRRRR!!!! That be good news me young buccaroo!!! ARRR!!!

(dont ask. Just felt like talking like a pirate on that one)
