I just purchased a 1972 Opel GT that’s been in the garage for 31 years and the gas tank has a lot of gunk in the bottom from evaporated gasoline. What would you recommend to dissolve the gunk. It’s a great project car for my grandson and I but we need to get the gunk dissolved out of the bottom of the gas tank.
I have a '69 GT, pulled the tank, ripped out the sock and had it tanked and pressure tested at my radiator shop. They then lined it with Red Kote. Less than a year later, my Opel kept stalling from fuel starvation. Pulled the tank and founded the coating peeling off in sheets! Removed the coating and used POR-15. I prefer cleaning tanks using phosphoric acid and chains. I worry about getting all the nuts, bolts, rocks, etc. out and grabbing chains is easier and insures nothing gets trapped inside.
