Not sure if I will be able to attach pictures, but...

On the way home from the great show @ Anastomos Motors, my Bitter had some seemingly minor engine problems. I lost power about 140 mi from home and couldn't diagnose on the road. Nursed it home and found 2 spark plugs that had the tip bent, I thought by carbon chunks breaking loose. I checked the compression, and the readings were consistent w/ a 89k mi motor, replaced the plugs and it ran fine. Next time on the highway it lost power again.
Nursed it to my brothers shop and found plugs 2 & 4 damaged severely, the porcelain was destroyed, and there was metal to metal damage to the end of the plug. I replaced the plugs and nursed it to work, then home.
I pulled the head today and found that piston #2 has a chunk of the piston missing, and indication that the missing chunk did a heck of a dance on pistons # 4, 5 & 6 also.

I have bought a '04 Silverado w/ 16K mi and will be swapping the 4.8l and 4l60e AT into the Bitter. I hope I do not incur the wrath of the purists, but when you figure in the cost of the rebuild, and machining, it is a no-brainer. I hope to end up w/ a more drivable vehicle that will get double the mileage, and greater parts availability.

before you do that, think about an Opel 3.0-24V from Germany. 204HP, straight-six, and this motor will last forever. It is a straight swap with your current engine, and takes less gas. You will still have an Opel engine. I'll be happy to assist you with getting one from Germany.

I agree that it would be better to keep it powered by an Opel. But...

I guess I would rather think of it as an upgrade to the next generation of the V8 that was used in the Bitter CD. So by that reasoning, I am keeping it first cousin close.

If I were to use the 3.0l 24v, I would still be using the TH180 w/ ~3,800rpm @ 70 mph.
How could that improve my mileage?

At this point it comes down to the bottom line. The 4.8l only has 16,455 mi on it. I will be able to use everything from the truck but the oil pan.

The tach will be replaced w/ one from a 4cyl Senator A from German ebay that I have.

One of the goals Eric Bitter had was to provide an exclusive car that could be taken to the local mechanic for service. I will have that.

I wouldn't think twice about the 293 vortec swap. The 325 cid would be even sweeter.

The tach I'm not sure that it's going to be that easy.
The 04 crank sensor gives the PCM a 24 event signal for RPM.

C2 connector to PCM

Pin 10 - White - Engine Speed Signal - Tach signal. Stock programming of the PCM will output a 4 cylinder tach signal. When I program the PCM, I can change this signal to a 8 cylinder. This way you don't have to modify your tach.

Update

It Lives!!!
I am getting close to completion on this project, but am hung up on the brake master cylinder. The master cylinder needed rebuilt, so had it sleeved and rebuilt, but the kit they used was not quite correct. The final seal that keeps fluid out of the booster leaks.
I have had no luck so far finding a rebuild kit. I know there is a following for Monzas and Senators across the pond, but can't find any links.
Can anyone help me out?

Fits Monza A & Senator A as well as Bitter SC

Thanks Dieter, he has the kit, but I am at this point looking one that is more affordable. You have to realize, I am an Opel owner first (frugal) and a Bitter owner second :yup:.
But I will call him if all other options fail.

Kevin - I looked at the ATE catalog and did not see any M/C kits listed. I wonder if regulations in Europe prevent rebuilding them?

I have never seen or heard about sleeves back in Germany. They would re-build them, opening up the diameter slightly (prolly in the 0.1mm range) by reaming it out - I think...

Master cylinder sleeving

My master cylinder was sleeved w/ stainless @ Brake & Equipment Warehouse in Minneapolis. There is also Past Parts in England that uses the same process. I am waiting on a response from Past Parts about the availability of a kit.

The process and equipment they both use was sourced in Australia, and from talking to the shop mgr. in Minn, they have done master cylinders from all over the world.

Lots to button up on the Bitter. Have to re-install the heater, master cylinder, wrap the engine wire harness, install dash, install instruments, hook up cruise control, and get the front end aligned. Hoped to be farther along, but this winter has been rough.

I have the gauge panel ready w/ a VDO electronic speedometer in place of the mechanical one, and the tach from a 4 cylinder Monza.
