exhuast fumes!!!!!

I finally got my Gt regisistered and i took it out on a 5 mile drive and it has a really bad interoir exhaust smell, the vent hoses have been replaced, and it dont smell like gas it smells like burnt exhaust...has this happen to anyone else??? and the only other problem i had was that the tires leak air out slowly, they are new... sounds like a bead to me. i still got the oil leaks also, so hopefully stop leak stuff will work... so any advice will be helpful. thanks

Fuming!

Humans cannot live with exhaust gas - it kills them quick. They go to sleep and never wake up again!

Check the entire exhaust system for leaks at the joints and for holes. Also if the tail pipes are too short (should reach the outer edge of the rear bumpers) gases can be "sucked" back under the car and make their way inside through the ventilation system or any unplugged holes in the floor pan (or through rust holes!).

This is a "MUST FIX" - or be poisoned thing.............

Is the boot around the gearshift lever intact - or has it torn with use? There is a hole right through to under the car there.

Sore throat and headache - you ARE being poisoned by the exhaust fumes.

smell

Could it be burning oil your smelling? That smells pretty nasty and could smell up the inside, probably give you a headache and sore throat too. It would probably smell strongest in the front part of the car and would be burning off the exhaust manifold and down pipe and could be coming in through your gear shifter boot area.

put it up on jacks and find the leak... joy joy

a complete 1 1/2' front to rear exhaust cost me 145 for the manta from a local muffler shop,, the GT can't be that much more... still I understand the 76 till payday so find the hole and get some muffler tape and use the 2/40 A/C

lookslike I get to pull the engine again even more joy cause of the throwout bearing situation..

Re: exhaust fumes are finally fixed!

heres what was done to fix the exhaust fumes in the cabin.
I still had problems after checking all my lens gaskets, new exhaust..even put in duck bill grommetts in the vent drain...stiil exhaust smell when window down..

fumes were not real evident with windows up BUT with windows cracked and when I first started the car..I had exhaust fumes...

i did 2 final things and its fixed:
1-caulked the broken rubber grommetts where the 12v wires exit to the rear bumper

2- caulked the new fuel line that exits the gas tank...never had a rubber boot....guess i figured out what the rubber boot was for..exhaust fumes!

PS: I have also been insulating the tunnel and firewall on the cabin side...whatever I have done ..its fixed

Opel Dean,
Thanks for the info! I have had an ongoing problem with exhaust smell but only when the driver side window is down. It is especially bad when the passenger side window is up and the driver side is open. I too am missing the boot around the fuel tank outlet. I wouldn't have guessed that that was causing the problem, but you given me something to try. Thanks again.

The reason you smell the exhaust when the drivers side window is down is because of air pressure. When you roll down your window, it pulls air out of the vehicle and draws in in from other sources. So if you have a leak in your exhaust in just the right spot, you willl draw the fumes into the car. make sure you have the gaskets for the tail lights AND housing, make sure you have the gaskets for the top of your gas tank "and vent hoses are clamped"
make sure there is no hole in your firewall that could draw fumes into it and also the shift boot is in 1 piece. I know several people have touched upon these, but Maybe you cabn find the cure. Good Luck!!

Good explaination. Early Datsun Z cars are notorious for this problem. I eventually got the A/C working on mine, primarily to be able to drive around with the windows up more often. Even small openings can be a problem.

Over the weekend while changing the rear tranny seal on my GT I noticed that the emergency brake linkage rod has a boot where it goes thru the body (mine is dried and in two pieces). This could also be a potential source...as can bad rubber drain hole plugs in the floorboard.

Happy hunting.

found big leak..in daylight

in fact two of them.to stick my head in the trunk there was an oder, as i drove i would sometimes question what i was smelling.

i thought i had my exhaust fumes fixed, but i did not. i get a little excited sometimes.

In my search for pin holes, which i found around the wires and emblem holes , i discovered two slots "leaking light at the base of the gastank by the lenses".

the only way to find the light leak is two take out the tire and its shelf, crawl in on top of tank and look behind tank in this dark crevise , i had two big light leaks where the tank rests against the body, ..maybe this is not a normal place to leak..but my tank has been out..and for whatever reason it leaks light at two places, from out side the car i cant see where the communication is to the interior.

this time I know i am fixed.

crawing into the spare tire area is a good way to check for leaks..i found several pinholes and the two slots..

going for a test drive now

so far so good on test drive

here is a spot to look, the two leaks are nickel to quarter sized slots. like a vending machine.

more testing to follow, windows up down, fan on off,etc

fumes from oil residue

i am losing a quart every 300- 400 miles, doesnt seem to be dripping that much.

1 -is my muffler to far back?

2- notice all the black spots that come out the back, spots dry to a black spot. "nobody' thinks i am burning oil. is this typical of pushing to much oli thru. also the tail gets dirty very quickly.

3- seems more than just condensation?

That does seem like more than condensation. There are a few things that can lead to a dirty rear-end... on your car... :p

Rich fuel mix, insufficient spark, oil getting into the combustion chamber, or built up carbon.

Rich fuel can be caused by an over-rich carb, or a stuck float. Insufficient spark can be from spark plugs that are "too cold", a spark plug gap that is set too wide or narrow, bad wires, or off timing (vacuum leak on the line to the vacuum advance might contribute). Either way leads to unburnt fuel traveling down your exhaust system.

If it's oil getting into the combustion chamber, then it can come up from the crankcase, or down from the head. Oil coming up from the crankcase, or blow-by, is caused by worn cylinder to piston or ring clearances (hi-mileage, infrequent oil changes, ingestion of particulates). Oil coming down from the head is caused by worn valve guides and is most often evident after sustained highway speeds.

I'm confident that your motor is not blowing out old carbon because I get the impression that you drive your GT fairly frequently.

The easiest way to tell if it's fuel or oil is to smell it, oil smells oily and fuel smells... actually like eggs.

Always get a second opinion of anything that I say, while it may sound like I know what I am talking about, I am still fairly green.

Losing Oil

Look at your fuel pump. I started to consume 1-2 quarts of oil and I traced it to the fuel pump. There is a rubber seal on the plunger of the fuel pump. If this wears, oil passes by and comes out a weep hole.

This happened to me but there were no drips on the garage floor. The underside of the fuel pump was wet with oil, but only dripped when the engine was running and I was moving(I guess it leaked at RPM's above idle and operating temp.) When I replaced the fuel pump, A fair amount of oil came out of it when I inverted it. Fuel pumps are inexpensive so it couldn't hurt to try this. So far, no more oil consumption. Just my 0.02

thanks- here is where i am at

1-mech. fuel pump is 1 year old- not leaking after new gasket
2-spark plug wire are 1 1/2 year old
3-plugs are 1 year old split fire
4-carb has been rebuilt with tekanar justs, throttle and idle mixture screws are about at normal settings
5- i have driven the car 250 miles a week all summer (life is good)
6-pertronx/new rotor cap last year- new coil -flamethrower
7- new exhaust 5 months ago -2in
8- vacuum is 17lbs at booster input to carb
9- engine has unknown milage, prior owner had Gil put a used engine in the car about 80,000 miles ago, we dont know milage of used engine, if the average used engine has 70,000 miles on it then this engine has 150,000 on it.
10-oil pressue runs at 1to 1 1/2 bar using castrol high milage 20-50 oil for old engines- i have put on a new ogts oil pump cover and spring
11- i a using a quart ever 3-400 miles, i will start to keep better track
12- not much seems to be leaking under car
