today on my lunch break from work i went to the local midas shop to check out approximately how much it would cost to get all new exhaust from the exhaust manifold back. i walk in and tell him i'm restoring an opel gt and he gets this strange look as hes trying to remember what kind of car it is then after busting his brain he gets it and decides to check his inventory to see if by some strange chance they would have a cat-back system for a '69 opel gt in stock... at that point i gave him the same strange look wondering why he would bother. after that failed he decided to call up one of his parts suppliers that specializes in systems for older cars. as soon as he mentions opel gt to the guy on the other end he starts laughing and says "no i'm not joking this time, theres a guy in here wanting exhaust for his opel". it took him a while to convince the guy to take a look, and he had nothing specifically for it, so i ended up asking him for an estimate on 2" pipe with a muffler. the estimate i got was $300-$400 for a $79 turbo muffler, 5 bends and 2 hours labour. does this sound like a good deal? remember, thats canadian so... somewhere around $220-$300 us, i think. i don't have much of an idea what it should cost so any thoughts are welcome. thanks

Places like Midas specialise in "nailing on" stock items that they know will fit - once you move into the "custom made" area they price accordingly to make sure they don't loose money.
Have a look in your Yellow Pages of the phone book under "Mufffler & Exhaust Systems - Service & Repair" or something similar. Try and find a smaller specialty muffler shop who do Custom systems and advertise "Tube bending".
Once you find a real good muffler shop you will be amazed how nice a job they can do for very reasonable prices. They won't laugh either ......

I agree with GtJim. Look around and you can find someone who will do it cheaper. I had mine done at a local shop and it ran me $100 including the muffler. They didn't laugh either. Everyone wanted to take a look at the car, and I spent the better part of an hour after it was done answering questions. Jarrell

I had my Sportwagon done a few years ago, by a MIDAS shop I have trusted for years and the price is about right. Mine was $230 for everything back from the head pipe (which is no longer available in the US, trust me on this) But, the job he does lasts forever. My GT was done by the same shop 15+ years ago, and have never had any problems, or had to touch the system since it left the shop.

when i had my exhaust put on last weekend i went to my exhaust guy handed him the flange that bolts to the exhaust manifold and told him i wanted everything after that brand new so about two hours later i had a brand new 1 3/4 down pipe to a 2" all the way to about the axle then stuck in a turbo muffler and finished it off with 1 3/4 to the tips cost $160 dollars thats for the muffler and the pipe used and if anything happens to it i can take it back and get it fixed for free. i think it sounds sweet with the setup i ran.

If you can make a trip to Toronto, there is a custom exhaust place round the corner from me...Noyz Boyz....Don't let the name put you off, these guys have done custom pipes for my Dakota, the i200 and my Green Eh Manta...all excellent jobs.
They're probably not the cheapest in Ontario, but they are good. If you get talking to them, tell Sav that Rob sent you.
HTH,
Rob.
PS...they will be in 411, but if you can't find them, give me a shout, I'll dig out their details.
