Exhaust Ques. for anyone w/ 2.2-2.4 motor

Ok, I'm sort of at a stopping point. My GT is ready to have an exhaust system attached. I have it at a place we can do it ourselves. However, the question is: What will I need to keep reasonably quiet a 2.2l motor running dual 45's. I have a 2 1/2" downpipe right now ready to get attached to something. I have a 4" round MagnaFlo (straight-thru) muffler but I don't think this will do much.

I've searched the forums but only seem to find what the 1.9l motors have upgraded too. And some of those say there still loud!

Those with 2.2 - 2.4 motors: What did you guys do about the exhaust??

well id say either put a turbo muffler on somewhere between the down pipe and the back, and u could also make the outlets a 1/4 or so smaller pipe that helps a little, also ive used these what look like just a piece of tube but they have baffeling in them work really well there made for like small block chevys and the like.
probably going to need dual mufflers, I would imagine that you would be best served by a pair of the same muffler as opposed to two different style mufflers.

I would say ask your local exhaust shop, but it's russian roulette based on who you talk to... and experience has nothing to do with that. The most "experienced" muffler guy in my town puts out the worst sounding, oversized exhausts (but his welds are sinfully perfect). But the new kid at our local Midas gets the right sound and size everytime.

Nice throaty 2.4 exhaust

Right now I'm running a port-matched '75 sprint manifold with standard twin downpipes welded at its junction to a 2.25" pipe, for which I used the original cut off piece as a template. This goes to a JCW 13" body "turbo" muffler and then to a 2.25" fabricated mandrel-bent "over-axle" pipe which continues to a fabricated twin outlet straight pipe in the original resonator outlet locations. I fabricated two chrome outlet tips from four muffler tips (2 round inside 2 ovals) from AutoZone. Throaty sound, not too loud.

When I finally install my roller cam, I'm changing just the front part of the exhaust to a Euro "tri-Y" style header along with a modified 3.0 FI manifold.

Thanks for the responses so far. I might have to check this turbo muffler out then. Keep the suggestions coming if you have them!

thx

try using 14 awg exhaust pipe instead of the typical 16 awg. you will be amazed at the difference. it really lowers the tone of the exhaust as well as lowers the volume in the car. thats why cast iron manifolds are so much quieter than headers.
the Tubular header on my GT was actually slightly quieter than the stock manifold.
cylinder inside an oval

otto: i like the way the tips look when you put the oval outside the cylinder,is this for looks only? or does it effect that exhaust soud?
thanks
More help needed

Haven't been on-line for way too long, so first of all Happy New Year to all

My question is on a similar line but I think I've confused myself over my inlet and exhaust manifold.

My GT currently has a 1.9 engine running early Injection and a Sprint Manifold, but I am just about to start the rebuild and will end up running a stroked 1.9 bottom end (2.2 crank and pistons) and then a heavily modified 2.2 head that I have (41/45mm valves, ported and flowed, Irmscher springs, solid lifters, SEXY :D Roller Rockers (thanks Gregg aka Samdog) and hotter cam).

I'm likely to use a modifed 3.0 inlet plenium, but may end up sticking with the 2.2 inlet but what I really need to know is can I still run my Sprint manifold or do I need to use a 2.2 exhaust manifold.......if so major problem, I don't have a 2.2 exhaust manifold.

If it is the case that I need a 2.2 exhaust manifold then next questions is, can I use a 2.4 one instead as these or more readily available.

 of UK.....needs your help.

I am pretty sure that you will find that all the exhaust manifolds will bolt up as only the postioning of the Intake ports was different.
That being said: A 2.4 exhaust manifold often has an oxygen sensor hole in it for the later model feedback type injection system. I think the 2.4 exhaust manifold has a different outlet flange size and position too.

here's a pic of a Sprint manifold and a 2.4 manifold next to each other. I don't have a 2.4 manifold of my own, and I do not have a pic of just the flange, but maybe this will help some. (the 2.4 manifold is the one on top)

Here's the gaskets that fit both types of flanges used on various "Sprint" manifolds.
Sprint flange round port sizes

I should add that even though the exhaust ports in the later, wide flange gasket are larger than those of the earlier, narrow gasket, the actual port sizes in the manifolds are identical!
