O.K., I've said this before, but, I'll do it again. Willit? with a weber, modified exhaust, on a very cold nite, for SoCal, read all the numbers on the speedo and tach. Note, it was indicated by the instruments, and not necessarily correct. But it took 3.5 miles to do it. The reason for the engine swap in progress.

I have a quickie...

I have a 71' GT with a 2.3 turbo'ed engine from a Ford SVO in it. Right now, the gauges do not work, but I am certain it will easily break the 100mph+ mark, and that will likely be in the 4th of 5 gears. Until I get the front air dam and bigger tires, I cannot push it too hard. But the weight to HP ratio is kind of scary.

i've had the GT doing a indicated 121 @ 6,150 RPM in 4th, and my manta has done a indicated 118 @5,900 RPM.

GT: weber, pertronix, electric fan, header, modified exhaust, stock air snorkel, and .435 lift/ [email protected] duration camshaft.

Manta: weber, pertronix, header, modified exhaust, and ported intake

both fitted with idiotic driver:D

Tom Drake's GT-4 Opel GT hit 161 mph at Road Atlanta (just before the 'dip') about 10 years ago. Calculated from the rpms, the gearing, and the tire diameter (no speedo in car).

I believe Gerry Lenk's old blue GT (the one Gil Wesson got his Manta 400 engine from) hit 162 mph on the autobahn before.

Almost lost it that day...

I had a 70 GT in college and was driving from Detroit to Columbus when I met up with an XR8. We both took off for some extended high speed driving. I don't recall how fast I was going, but it was pretty well over 100. We came into a sweeping left turn on the highway and I chickened out and backed off quick. That is how I learned about getting the suspension loaded going into a corner. I did end up saving it, but things started happening REAL fast. I started fishtailing and luckily thought to romp back on the throttle right way. Then I backed off a little slower and pulled into a rest stop for a little break...

Funny, when I bought my first Opel in 1971, the first ticket I have ever had came with the original everything inside our GT, and the policeman clocked me at 113 going over the Summit. Passed every car on the way up, just couldn't resist! Kinda made me mad cause I was really looking forward to the speed I could have gotten to comming down the hill if he hadn't stopped me. :D 1.9 engine and a Solex. Oh well, it was fun anyway!

The year, 1984, 105 mph at night on a 115K motor. Noticed red pieces of carbon coming out of the exhaust in my rear view mirror. Slowed it down to 70 and I started breathing again:p

Brings up another question.........

What is the fastest you have ever gone in a car? Me, 165mph and I was not driving - could not beleive my eyes when I looked at the speedo.

Another one....... strongest car I have ever been in.....eary 60's Mustang with 427 (never saw an engine so stuffed under a hood) the owner would put a $100 bill on the dash and the game was when he said go you had to grab the $100 before he reached 4th gear - no one could. That car had so much torque, you could really feel the g's it pushed you back in the seat and you could barely reach out with your hand and then came the shift....

Check out my avatar; I watched this one run the S/G 9.90 index all day long and I'm currently building mine similar to it. This DEFINITELY isn't your typical GT....:D
