Charlie sent me this pic from the FSM about how to fix fluid leaks due to fluid seeping through pores in the tranny housing.
WHATTTTTT?
Honestly, is this a problem that anyone has ever heard of?
The fact that it's in the FSM must make it an actual thing that has occurred and people have complained about.
This all came about after I filled my Banana car's unknown history auto tranny and it started leaking like a pig on my lift. All new gaskets and seals, except for the difficult to replace and seldom leak prone gear selector shaft seals. I had cranked the not-ready-to-run engine for 2 minutes straight, thinking that would pump the fluid through the system, but it still leaked. So, then I went under the car and dislodged the fill tube and fluid gushed out. So, I drained off a little fluid and the leak has stopped. I'm thinking that I overfilled the tranny due to the confusion in the FSM where all the fluid requirements are listed in quarts, but the auto tranny is notated as being in pints(10 1/2). I'm pretty sure that I only poured in about 3 quarts(6 pints).
Charlie also said that just cranking the engine isn't enough to get the tranny's pump to pump the fluid effectively.
I'm not and don't want to be worried about this problem right now. Bolbers has offered me the auto tranny he removed from his car when he went with a stick, so I'm holding his offer in reserve in case this unknown OU tranny has an issue. I'm going to wait until I have the engine running and put the car through my usual method of filling the tranny, which is to slowly add fluid until it starts to move when I put it in Drive. I then test it to see if it slips out of gear when taking sharp right turns or doesn't shift at all. Any non-shifting or slippage is usually fixed by adding half a quart or less fluid.
Don't worry about all the blathering I just did, I just wanted to post the pic below from the FSM that Charlie sent me for posterity. The proof in the pudding will come when I have the engine running and I can do my usual tranny fluid filling procedure.
When I worked at the dealership this repair note was in almost all the different models FSM. We never did this repair, best to order a new case for the customer and our dealership. Never had a warranty claim denied. We always laughed when we read that and said "yea sure...".
I have seen this for alloy wheels as well.
HTH
I'd swear that my aluminum oil pan is seeping oil. Never can find a leak when it's running, but there is always a puddle under it when it's been sitting for a month.
