What would cause a car's exhaust to pop while at a constant cruise?

It's not a full blown backfire. The best analogy is automotive flatulence...farting.

Is this popping unburnt gas in the exhaust? If so, does this just mean too rich a mixture?

Thanks,

On the contrary, a light popping is typically a lean air/fuel mixture. Another cause of this is overly advanced ignition timing. Be sure to check it out, either can cause engine damage!

Thanks Bob. That exclamation point at the end of "engine damage" has my attention as the engine in question is in my Dino.

If no alterations or tuning changes were done to the engine, look for a vacuum leak, as that will artificially lean the fueling out.
