Went and looked at a Getrag 240 today. The clutch for this transmission is hydraulically acutated.

In all my searching of this forum, I've yet to see a reference to a hydraulic clutch. Am I not looking in the right places?

Guys at BMW aftermarket shop were at a loss.

So my question(s):

The Getrag 5 speed, model 240, do they all require hydraulic clutch actuation? Or is there a mechanical clutch 'model' available. These guys want to help me out but need more specific model information i.e, model 242, or some other specific BMW - and I would like to help them help me. Just had to pass on a $200 serviceable 5 speed because of the hydraulics. Or is this an issue of import vs. export 5 speed?

HELP. Long-haired E9 has given me a green light for a 5 speed and I need to move on it before she changes her mind as she's already focused on Xmas.

Ah, it's becoming clearer to me now; thanks Gary.

Was this 240 transmission with the Opel pattern purely Opel specific, or can the Opel pattern be found in BMW's of the early years - or other Euro vehicles?

I searched to no avail, and with this specific information regarding the bellhousing pattern is there anywhere to look to find the applications of this particular 240 transmission? Or does this transmission w/bh pattern exist only in Opels? What I'm driving at is "what do I tell the [bmw] boys familiar with Getrags to look for". Sorry about this guys but I thought I had this one sorted out but am now more con-fu-zed than before.

Or......just say screw it and order everything from OGTS? which I really hate to do as shipping to Georgia can get rich. Especially when I can possibly find one in my own back yard if I just know specifically what to look for. Plan is to find a box here and order the necessary mod parts from OGTS.

Open to all suggestions.

Getrag 240 for Opel CIH ONLY!

The 240 has an integrated bellhousing and IS Opel specific. As a matter of fact, it will ONLY bolt up to Opel CIH engines (1.5 - 2.4), not even other Opel engines! :eek:

I just got two getrags shipped here from Europe. One from Germany ($228) and Belgium ($268 these are just the shipping costs via DHL, the germany was then shipped out to CA via UPS for an additional $42. Check the German Ebay for a getrag

Thanks Grant. Gene, thank you for the specific PM info. Your words were what I was looking for; big help. Hmmm..what to do over a wet Labor Day weekend....may have to make a few contacts on the other side of the pond now that I know what I'm looking for.

Worse case: hold off and let my Nov/Dec Italy trip pay for a kit from Gil; can have the whole 9 yards waiting for me to install upon return stateside 4 days before Xmas. Now that would make for a very SSweet holiday. Granted it's the pricey way out, but it sure eliminates the guesswork when I'm only at the beginning of my Opel learning curve. Sure wish I could take this car with me (would kill to have my SS over there) rather than be stuck with some FWD POS rental for a couple months.

Will also investigate a weekend side trip to Germany while there. Wouldn't cost a dime to bring a 5 speed home with me. Bound and determined to have a 5th gear before 2005 starts!

getrag

Doug;
Why don't you pop by the house, over the weekend, and I can take you step by step through it all. I don't have my 2nd 5-spd mounted yet, so you can see what one looks like. Give me a buzz 404-797-2759 (M) 678-344-7579 (H)

couldn't a conversion plate be made up to use most any small 5 speed transmission? I remember being on a website I believe it's called kennedy industries who makes transmission to engine conversions plates in aluminium, mild steel, and chromoly.
