what you need are VW golf/rabbit mark 1 head lights they are H4 so you get a halogen bulb they are almost shatter proof so if you slam the gt lights over they do not brake and they are direct replacement
good to see with white light instead of looking about by dim candle light with the orig sealed beam units
i will add a pic tomorrow as its too cold and we just had another 2" of snow in last hour

I agree with 'baz" I installed the H-4 Hella's to give me the european factory look and they light up the road. No wire mods needed, they plug right in. You can even change the brightness with different bulbs. A company called Susquehanna Motorsports will sell you a comlete set for the GT, Kadett or Ascona(1900) for 72.00 + Shipping.

Here is their link: http://catalog.com/susq/hella.htm

They also sell the 4 bulb style for Mantas and Fog & Driving lights

too much $

Please don't spend that much! Order your sealed beam H-4 replacement headlights the same time you order your Pertronics unit from a VW supplier and they'll sell you the lights for @$12 each. That's almost like getting a free Pertronics! Order copper exhaust nuts and new Seat Belts while you're at it and you'll still be under $175 for a ton nicer and safer car.

stephan the whole point of this is that the lights are changed from sealed beam to H4 with changeable halogen bulbs the glass lens on the H4 will not crack like the SBUnits this was a fix i used because i went through 5 SBU's in 2 month when the action of the light units caused cracks in the SBU's glass which then allows air in and burns out the filliment
figgered even if the H4 lens cracked the bulb would be ok so less changes
hope that is clearer

jlthunder,
You don't happen to have a part number for these headlights do you? I went to the web site and can't find anything on "Opel". I thought a part number might speed things up. Thanks

mis-type

I completely understand, and I mis-typed above. The VW guys sell the H-4 sealed beam replacements for @$12. If you look a little through old posts I made this recomendation a year and a half ago. All the VW bugs used the same size headlights.

Washout

Here is the item # H6024A. Here is the direct link to this webpage
for these lights http://www.rallylights.com/hella/7in.asp

They offer different wattages. The H6024A is the DOT approved wattage, then you can go brighter with the H6024B, H024C, etc.

Sorry, I should of made this more clear. This web page doesn't search by car type. The headlights on the Opels are the old std 2 or 4 headlight sealed beam system(GT, Kadett, Ascona or Manta) used in the 60's and 70's on all cars Import or Domestic. This is the only replacement part used on Opels which you could buy off the shelf at any Mom or Pop parts store.

I know I'm going to hear about this one:p

sorry i think im not making myself clear also
the vw 7" H-4 unit with a replacable halogen bulb is to replace the opel h4 with non replacable bulb (ie a seald beam unit)
i said the vw unit because i know its used in the US as the rabbit/golf mark 1 &2 was imported
so if you are doing a search then look for VW not opel for these lights

Well, after searching around, i've found them for anywhere from 70 to 100 dollars a set. I see nowhere that you can purchase them for anywhere near 12 dollars each. The Opel i've purchased already has electronic ignition so purchasing the lights 'along with' it isn't an option.

Does 70 dollars sound about right for a set of them or are there some more inexpensive places out there? Also, what's wrong with grabbing some out of a junkyard off of a wrecked Golf?

Thanks again,
Claud

here you go

I was wrong, they are now $6.95 each. Here is one place to get them, if you want more get a copy of HotVW's:

http://www.socalautoparts.com/HotVWs_Ad/HotVWs_Ad_p01.html

These guys want $8.62 each, but you'll have to take the initiative to type "h-4" in the search field to find them.
http://www.kustom1warehouse.com/Index.cfm

and here's another, for $10 each:
http://mooreparts.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=MP&Category_Code=H4HEADL
They also have a Pertonics knock-off available called a MagFire ignition for $34 or the compufire version for $50 (which I think is better than the Pertronics points eliminator, myself)

These guys also have them for $10, but their web store isn't working so you will have to call:
http://www.pacificcustoms.com/

But feel free to pay $70 somewhere else if you want, it's your money.
