Here's one for the group.

Last Thursday I took my GT for a drive and it ran great. The place I needed to go was about 20 minutes away, so I thought it would be a great drive to burn out some carbon on the highway.

I was in my meeting for about an hour, maybe an hour and a half.

When I came out to start my GT, it wouldn't start. I had to jump start it and the timing seemed way off. The Tach was showing 7,000 to pegged rpm. A lot of back firing and coughing.

Specs:
My GT has a 1.9 bored to a 2.0 ltr. E.F.I. off a European 2.0 ltr. Crane electronic ignition.

Again, everything seemed great on the way down. Now it seems like it has slipped a cog on the timing chain or the ignition is firing way off.

Any help would be great.

a silly thought is your distributor locking clamp tight ?



2 right turns make it tight ! 3 right turns make it striped:D

sorry could not resist it

I checked the distributor right off to see if it was loose or turned and nothing seems out of the ordinary.

The distributor is snug and the cap is snug in place and the roter is fine.

dissy timing is on a cog that drives off the cranck shaft so it should not jump there if anything jumps i think it would be the cam as its on a chain
i think the only way is to start by setting the crank to dead top centre by linning up the ball in the flywheel (i know its a pain to see under the manifold but it has to be done add a dot on the front pully and 1 on the timimg cover with white paint or tip-ex to be abel to reset it quickly ) then reset timing if its moved if not then check the spark by putting a plug in 1 lead at a time and ground it where you can see it to see if you have a spark at each pug if all ok then look at setup of the crane system
if its ok then check the cam (just put pull the cam cover of the top and check the cam timing ) after that next to look at is fuel
(is it getting any)
after that its a gremlin and you need a preast to exorcise it:D

Wire harness possibilities

Baz,

Thanks for the suggestions.

This is the wierdest gremlin I've chased through these cars.

Another question:

Does anybody know where to get a new wire harness for a 72 GT? I know there is the company in Germany that does the complete rebuild of an existing harness (using your old connectors), but I was wondering an here State side?

Chris, might want to look over the ignition system carefully. The Tach indicating so high could be pointing to a problem here. You may want to unhook the tach wire from the coil to eliminate the possibility of a short in the wiring or the tach itself.
