I looked into the exact same scenario when I almost got a couple of GTs from the east coast. The problem with a Uhaul truck isn't the size. It's getting the car into the truck at around 3 feet off the ground. I found out that cost and loading made a two or three axle trailer the only way to go. You can also rent a tow dolly that just carries the front wheels. With both of these options you need a tow vehicle. Uhaul is pretty picky about this end of it. I found out that with the trailer I needed a pretty good sized vehicle to tow, not quite as big for a tow dolly. To make a long story short, per car was going to cost around 500 for uhaul from Michigan to central Colorado. The cheapest auto hauling company wanted 600. I didn't buy the cars mostly for this reason. I now have a tow set just for GTs. Everything included cost me around 300. Depending on the condition of the GT to move one only costs gas money. Moving mine twice more than paid for it.

I went the way of the car trailer from U-Haul. The problem I had with the two-wheel dolly type was the ground clearance to get the GT onto the dolly. The GT I purchased already had the front spoiler ground affects and the two-wheel dolly would have scraped it big time.

I also ran into the same issue with the tow vehicle. I have an F-150 super-crew with a Class 3 hitch, so there was no problem there.

The rental of the dolly was not that bad, I think around $120.00 for three days.

You might check with friends that have motorhomes and tow their vehicles. Their dollies or trailers work great for a lot less. I talked to one friend that had a trailer and was glad to loan it to me, but it was 700 Miles the opposite way I needed to go. Oh Well!

The problem you might have, if you get a GT into a truck, is finally getting yourself out of the GT. It could be tricky.

Good luck,
Chris

In my experience, I rented a car trailer from Uhaul I think and pulled it with my 97 Dakota. Renting the trailer in Maryland and taking it to upstate NY empty and returning it back to MD the next day was MUCH cheaper than a one way trip from NY to MD. it sucks pulling it empty as it bounced a lot. Moving it from MD to TX Uhaul wanted like $800 rental for a trailer. I bought a trailer for $900 and sold it 4 years later for $600.

I had a tow adapter made for the front of the GT where the front bumper mounts. 3/8 2x8 C channel with 2 2 x 10 pieces to mount it up for 40 bucks. The tow bar I got new from uhaul for 120. I also got the magnetic lights for around 40. To finish it off I needed the wiring for the car and a hitch, that was 100 or so. Now by any standards I can pull my GT with the little pissant ford escort. I just have to make sure everything is tight and good tires on the GT. The escort pulled it, I won't say well but my weights were right for it. I just moved one the same way with the S10 and it did great. Bang for the buck this is the way to go. I could be off and gone with a GT up on blocks in under 2 hours. Up on tires in maybe 1/2 an hour. Where did you say this car was sitting?

My son & I used a flatbed trailer. Main advantage was not worrying about the condition of the brakes, wheels, tires, brake lights.

Just winch it up, strap it down, and forget its back there.

Flat Towing

Be careful towing a GT by the front bumper mounts as those frame members are very flimsy and if anything goes wrong with the GT brakes or wheel bearings - or you do an emergency stop they will just tear out.

Don't thread a rope through the "nostrils" - BB from Texas had a real 'nice' photo of a GT that had been towed that way - er ... by someone else!

Strapped down on a sound flat deck trailer designed to take the load of a car (2,000 plus pounds) is probably the safest way I know. Always check or advertise for a "back load" for the empty journey as there may well be someone else wanting to move something in the other direction:D

To get Speedway GT home to Montana from Colorado I found a moving company whose driver was glad to do the deed. Those big 54 foot box trailers you see being pulled down the road are empty half the time, ya know...
It had some nice ramps, too, but we found it impossible to push a dead GT up it. Some quick brainstorming determined that if the GT was on the car trailer backwards and the ramps went from the car trailer to the moving van, three guys could push it up while the fourth steered and braked if necessary.
And yes, it is then difficult to get out of the GT. Good thing we're stock car racers, we always climb out the window...
So consider this when you need to haul something. Find a truck driver who can sneak a load somewhere when he's running empty. It worked pretty neatly for me!

Silly me bought my GT on E-bay in Miami and I live an hour away from Opels unlimited. That was before I knew much of anything about these things. I drove out to Tampa for a work related conference and towed the GT home by the front wheels on a dolly. Every not too much problem except for the rear tire blowout in the middle of the desert. Made me wish I had opted for the flat bed.

Like I wrote earlier, I used a u-haul car trailer to tow mine from Texas to Kansas.

About 5:45 am, in Oklahoma, I had a blowout on the trailer, which I didn't think was too bad as it was a tandem axel. I found a place to replace the tire and it turned out that I needed both replaced. The tire that blew was nothing but two sides, no tread. And the one that it was riding on was shucking it's tread.

There was no u-haul place around at the time so I paid for the tires and left.

U-Haul was very good about reimbursing me for the cost of the tires, BUT I didn't get the insurance for the car so they wouldn't cover the damage to the car. As the tire spun apart, it had some steel belts that whipped up and out from under the fenderwell and scratched paint off the car.

I would HIGHLY recommend getting the towing insurance from the rental place or your insurance company when towing any vehicle. Too many things can happen that will mess up the experience.

I towed my GT from Durham, NC to Phila, PA on a tow dolley backwards. The rear end was locked up. I secured the steering wheel and had no problems. It was towed with a 75 Nova.

I recommend a flatbed since the tires on the trailer are usually in better shape than the Opel.

jlthunder, just curious. Did you have to drive the "Sure-Kill" to get home from Phila.? When I lived back in So. Jersey, I'd drive that a couple times a month. I can't even imagine doing a tow like that on a road like that!:p

Old Hippie;

No, I took I-85 to I-95 to 202(in Delaware)through Norristown to Ambler(Maple Glen). It was almost as bad as the Shur-Kill expressway. The Blue Route was not even completed back then This was in 1985, a more gentler time & big hair.:D
