One of my wheel cylinders was leaking and spilled DOT3 all over the place.

What the easiest/safest way of cleaning up this mess?

Any suggestions are welcome, being that this is my first
brake job ever!

just went through that junk a month or so ago. not leaking helps clean up alot!!! JK. oil dry seemed to work "ok". let it set over night and grind the stone over the spill to clean it up faster.

sorry i'm a little tired. brake clean is awesome. if there is alot of dirt in there i ususally steal a little bit of mineral spirits from the parts washer and take a brush to clean it all down and then rinse it with brake cleaner
sorry i mis-understood you

On the car: towel off the extra brake fluid then use brake clean spray. If you spill it (DOT3)on the car paint, wipe it up quick. Because it seems to eat paint. And you will eventully get rust on the De-painted area.

On the floor: wipe up and use the cheapest clay based Kitty litter. It works for oil spills in the shop too.

it seems to leave white chalky marks where it comes in contact with the paint. learned the hardway but paint was junk anyway

If you have spilt it or it has leaked onto the friction material on either the brake shoe or caliper pad, you should really replace the pads or shoes (in complete sets, as in both sides of the same end). The brake fluid will affect the friction characteristics of the material in a very inconsistent and discomforting fashion. As in, one moment that side will grab (pulling the car over to that side) and the next it will fail to grab, sending the car hurtling over to the side that has the clean brake pads.

That being said, if it is a VERY small amount that has touched the pads or shoes, brake cleaner can sometimes clean it off. But I repeat, you should REALLY replace them. The cost of the brake pads are minuscule compared to the cost of replacing you car. Or your life.

Off the soap box now....
