The "Bronze" piece:

To remove the "bronze" piece: IF the cap is locked, i.e., rotates freely, you can center the cap over its detent position. This will put the key cylinder lock retaining screw at right angles to the detents in the housing. Drill out one of these detents. Rotate the chrome piece 90 degrees and the set screw will be visible thru the hole you just drilled. Remove it and the key cylinder will FALL out. You can rekey it your self or have a locksmith do it. If the cap is NOT locked, the above method will not work and you must either use a puller on the bronze piece or melt the retainer (previously described on other threads) . Either way, you will need to make a new retainer.

'Destec' aka J.J. Wheatley was a real innovator in the Opel hobby. Among other things, he built a beautiful Aero GT replica.
I think you can find some pictures of that car on this site. He was the first person (that I know of) to design a set of LEDs specifically for the
Opel GT tail lights/turn signals. He sold those for a while, and I think I may have purchased his last set about 10 years ago, He also
is known for his laminated GT wiring diagram which is indispensable for sorting out balky Opel circuits. I wasn't aware of these gas cap diagrams.

I got some of JJ's work, I got the brake and turn signal LED Light inserts for the rear lights. They are truly a work of art. I also got one of his full color large laminated wiring diagrams. There is a lot of information on that diagram, in fact the whole right side is filled with mods to make life better for your GT. He was a great source back in the "old days". Miss him very much.

As many of you know, Vickie and I bought "Opie", our blue GT from JJ. He really was a great guy and a true innovator. Opie had been pretty much a test mule for many of the modifications he put into the Aero. When we bought Opie, he gave me a "tech manual" that described, in detail, all of the different systems of the car that he modified. He made me swear that I would not reproduce and or distribute any of this information.

I am now trying to get the car back on the road and hope to get it to Carlisle by 2022! (I have a lot of work to do!).

I really miss JJ. He was a good friend.

Retainer material

The drawings with the retainer dimensions are great, now if I find out what material the retainer is made out I can get a couple of spare gas caps back together. Does anyone have any info on the retainer material?

The right thread?

I don't know if this is the right place for this, but it is gas cap related? I have one cap that has good chrome, looks to be in good shape, has no key (but that doesn't appear to be a problem) AND HAS NO KEY COVER (with the Blitz). Does anyone have a diagram of how that cover "works" i.e., what holds it in lace and allows it to swing out of the way? Maybe some dimensions, etc?

I am considering building a custom cover (if I can) so any help would be appreciated!
