Hi,
When I put the key in my gas cap, the cylinder just turns, and in fact the whole cylinder will come out if you don't hold it in. I saw a few thread which point a web link on the front page. For the life of me, I can't find this link. Does someone have the article about rekeying the gas cap?? i think this is what I need.

Thanks for the site..alot of nice articles. Found the one for the gas cap, and now that I know HOW its supposed to work, I'm not in that bad of shape...I think. My gas cap locks, the cylinder turns...the cap locks and spins without opening. You turn the cylinder and it unlocks. The one thing it does, is the cylinder will come out of the cap with the key, if you don't hold it in..this is the only problem. IS this an easy fix?? Almost sounds like it missing a clip or nut at the bottom? Thoughts??

I think JJ's article on this site covers that - from memory there is a brass ring clip that holds it in - his article has drawings.

Thanks. I did search and viewed this post..but didn't know the brass clip held it in. For some reason I was seeing the set screw on the side as doing this..but couldn't see one without taking it apart. The cap still has that brass clip on it, so I should take it off, push down the cylinder, put the clip back on..and hope it catches it...

Alright...got it fixed!! In case anyone else had the problem. The retaining ring does not hold the cylinder in, but you do have to remove it to get the housing off. It is the set screw on the inside. I remember reading a post, abot drilling out the "dimple", then turn the cap..you would be able to see the screw. Did just that, and it worked like a champ!.. Thanks for the help guys,

More Challenge!

Here are a couple of pics of a gas cap and the key cylinder.
The groove on the lower end of the cylinder is where the tiny grub screw that goes through the inner part of the gas cap engages to hold the tumbler in place. The grub screw is located inside the unit exactly at the level of the tiny round indentations in two of the "splines".
To get at the grub screw with the cap locked requires that a small hole be drilled through the out casing to give access. If the cap is unlocked the job is a bit more difficult as the indentation and the grub screw are not lined up. In this case it sounds like the chrome part and the inner grey "pot metal" part must be separated by ..... heating around the base of the central pillar on the inside of the cap till the plastic locking ring melts and the two halves separate. This destroys the retaining clip so another one needs to be made - fortunately Destec has done a drawing of what is needed elsewhere in this site.
Moral of the story - DON'T LOOSE the KEY!!

I never knew how the cap worked. I thought when you unlocked it the chrome part could be removed...Doh!

My plastic retaining clip must be worn or damaged. I can remove the chrome part with very little effort. I was going to make a new ring, per Destec's drawings (thanks JJ).
Was wondering what to make it out of! Needs to melt easily!
Delrin?
I was going to just machine a tube and cut them off to .100" long. Then take a razor blade and cut the ends, could make a couple extra if someone needs one.

I did mine out of styrene, I had a ring of it sitting around that turned out to be exactly the right size. It sure will melt if I heat it up :D

Jeff, I made the ring today. Had some 1" Delrin so I used that.
The first ring I made was about .102" thick and it wouldn't seat in the groove all the way, what a pain to get out!!!
Made another one to .095" thick and filed the corners .010" and it seated fine.
Greased and oiled everything and pressed it together in a vise, using soft Pine to protect the chrome.
Now it spins and won't come apart, works great!
Another step closer to a perfect GT!:veryhappy

gas cap

So far this is the only thing I can't seem to get off the car.

My GT came without keys. I knew I would be unable to unlock the gas cap but figured on just having a key made. But when I was looking around it the other day the tumbler lifted right out of the cap. So there it is -- I can take the tumbler to the locksmith and get a key made but what then?

Can someone help me with either getting the tumbler back in or getting the whole gas cap out (without a key)?

I don't know if a locksmith can help much with the tumblers, other than possibly cut you a key. But, as far as caps go, I have a spare that can be used.

If you don't care about drilling a small hole in the cap, next to the tumbler hole, you can get it off. Using a 1/8" drill bit, drill a hole down through the chrome and into the brass piece below, you will have to do it by "feel". Then you take the drill bit out of the drill and use the back side of it as a pin. Stick it into the drilled hole, it will lock the top to the bottom and you should be able to remove the cap. Be careful, slow speed, no sparks. You don't actually drill through the cap all the way so you should not have any issue with explosion :eek: hazzard.

Once I realized all the great search results here I did a lot of reading. I think the I'm going to get the best results with Jim's idea about drilling a hole. I don't think I could just remove the filler neck because I saw a good size pin (vent tube breather) holding everything in when I crawled up in the spare tire compartment.

I was excited to find all the info. about rekeying the cap though. One less expense and I can key it to my ignition key if I ever get it! Great idea!

Guys I need your help!

I've done some reading, and the GT gas cap, looks similar to the manta's gas cap that I have and need to chrome again. (I've the original keys)

But to chrome I need to completely disassemble the gas cap ... does any one knows if the working scheme is the same?

Do you recommend me to heat the cap to melt the retaining clip???
