My father and I just bought a 72 Opel GT for me, the only problem I can't figure out how to fix is the Shifter, No matter what gear the transmission is in the shifter moves around like its in nutral. I am looking to fix it this weekend so any help you could offer would be great. Thank you all.

Sounds like the pivot pin is missing. Pull up the console, then the shift boot and look at the center basse of the shifter. there's a pin that's suppose to go through the shifter fork, and catch the shifter itself. You don't have to look for that pin, just get a 5/16" X 2 1/2" bolt with a nylock nut on it and you're back in business. All this should take about 10 minutes to fix.

I was looking at the shifter from under the 72 and the 73. I seem to be missing a spring on the 72, the spring directly under the shifter. I guess it might help to have that one on as well? Looks like the pin is in place but did not see it all the way through. Is there a way to work on all this with out removing my boot, is original and in very good condition. I am still fairly new at working on my GT and have the factory book but does not always say the best way to go at a repair. (one of the many reasons I love this site.) Thanks

Joe, the shifter boot is rubber, it is held in place by the console cover and a flanged lip on the console. It is very pliable and should not give you any problem removing it. One consolation, if, because of extreme old age, it tears OGTS has replica replacements. The console is held in place with 4 spring clips, two at the rear and two midway up and possibly two screws in the front edge. It's been so long since I've had mine on.

Use some liquid soap and your mom"s hairdryer on the boot- it will come off ok
