I'm at a stand still. Got the side pipes installed, next step is to hook
them to the engine properly.

From this thread http://opelgt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3980 and this
thread http://opelgt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4117

I get two answers.

1. use the stock head pipe and where it splits, continue the split and
route to seperate side pipes at a 1-1/2 diameter or 1-3/4. FirstOpel1981 has this.

2. use stock head pipe and from where it merges back to a single pipe
route to ONE side with a two inch pipe.

Rally"the man"Bob says:

"A single merged pipe from the twin upper headpipe tubes will have better velocity, but more importantly, the exhaust pulses will help scavenge the cylinders correctly. Splitting the headpipe looks cool, but sounds kinda funny and always loses power and torque. Seen it before, tried it before, hated it!"

Does this pict show the way to get the most HP of running side pipes?

thanks
sorry for asking over and over.

Chuck - you have got it in one! To coin a phrase.
There is no thumping great V8 up front to drive two side pipes so one will work and do a great job - the other will just be there for show.
Your GT will sound terrible if you just run two cylinders through each side.

BTW: the LH side pipe does look like it belongs there on your GT in the pic.

Listen to Bob!

I like the look of the sidepipe but have to agree with Bob and Jim on spitting the head pipe as a bad idea. This is just an idea from somebody who has a non stock exhaust but have you concidered moving the drivers side inlet for the sidepipe back and then crossing over from your head pipe to the drivers side? this idea kind of depends on if the sidepipe has a built in muffler of any kind. My reasoning is that the head pipe is further back than the beginning of yours now. Another thing I'll say is that I personally like the tone from the short pipes and I've not seen a drop in power from it. Then again you may have enough room to maneuver the pipe back and hit the front inlet with some skilled bending.

It just dawned on Me that I know nothing of your motor and that really does matter as in if it's stock or some stage of performance.

Very nice if you have a V6 conversion, but never doubt a long time Opel mech on such good advice. I've been a shade tree mech for a long time and never have considered the out flow dynamics. Thanks again, RallyBob! No matter what age, you have to just keep on learning (or be dead :p ).

ok my 2 cents, what if you were to install a muffler ike normal then split a "Y" off the end then ran the pipes to each side pipe? you wouldnt loose backpresure because you would still have a source of restriction, but the pipes would be functional and would produce a good throaty sound, be sure to use 14 gauge pipe though. lots of extra pipe i know, but who said it was easy? i will probly try this combo next year some time.

BTW your pipes look SWEET.

I'm hoping to do some sort of upgrade on the motor eventually. Right now I am running 1.9 high compression, 38 DAGS weber, and I'm porting the intake manifold as well as have a sprint manifold that's never been on the car yet. It will be part of the "side pipe" project.

One issue that FirstOpel1981 said in another post related to his sidepipes was that he was going to have to cut his pipe going to the driver's side because if he ever wanted to drop the engine and tranny that would have to be done. So...

I figure if I do just the one side, in hopes of future engine conversion, then there won't be as much work involved at that time.

Opelwasp had a good idea, but that is a lot of tubing. would I keep that tubing 1 -3/4 inch? They do have a built in muffler already tho...

anyway this isn't a must to get all max horse power out of the sidepipe look currently... just would be fun-nen-ner.

what if I ran the full stock head pipe all the way back then rerouted it right back to the inlet of the passenger side pipe. would having it travel thru more pipe be better?

Thanks!! I am loving the look of them. I'm be a chrome pollishing nut tho..

i will be splitting the "Y" with 2 1/4" pipe, and using it the rest of the way, and like i said 14 gauge pipe. 14 sounds "firmer", not so tinny like the 16 gauge. it will aldo hold up better to clearance mishaps.
