My 74 Sportwagon won't idle. It is stock, except for the weber 32/36 (newer version with idle circuit solenoid) I can be driving along and it will back fire, not bad, but, it does backfire. If I pull to a stop, it will shut down like I have turned the key off. It will start right up, and accellerate with no problem, just won't idle. I have checked the timing and it's dead on, I have even checked the cam timing and it's correct. Any ideas, I'm stumped

The idle solenoid is staying closed......?? Check it for electrial supply and operation.
There is also an idle jet holder that screws into the solenoid mounting thread to replace the soleniod with a conventional jet

i'd check all connections and make sure the ICO is working well. when the car is off you can turn the key on with the hood open and head out the window to hear the solenoid "click"

I have a used solenoid if you want, if I didn't throw it out. I converted my weber so you don't need it. PM me and I will look for it if you want it.

OGTS sells the conversion plug if you want to go that route.

32/36 idle solenoid wiring

Gene,
Does your carb still use an electric choke like the stock Solex? If so, jumper a wire from its electrical connection to your solenoid. If not, use the stock electric choke wire to power your solenoid . . . it's a good switched 12V source and, best of all, it's already there!

Electric idle solenoid

Jeff
I was reading through your posts and you talk about a conversion kit to bypass or eliminate the idle solenoid. I can sure use your help here as I can't find a replacement for mine. It's on a 4 cyl 1979 chevette engine. I'm using it on a 1965 Bombardier sidewalk plow. Any help you can give would be appreciated.
Thanks
Larry

Wow, that is an old post. I think I still have it. PM me your address. (put your mouse on my ID name and click it. There is an option for private message) If I have it, I'll send it to you no cost. It is just collecting dust.

Just fixed idle problem on my 1975 (which I just put a Weber on after pulling off the efi). It would die out at every stop unless you had the idle up so high that when you put the car in gear you got a clunk. It has the cable accelerator linkage so I didn't see how it could be binding like a GT's linkage will.
Did a google search on tuning a Weber and it stated over half of all Weber tuning and idle problems are caused by linkage issues or the linkage on the carb being overly tightened causing binding. I loosened the linkage where the "ball" attaches to the accelerator shaft of the carb and that was all it took. Thus was able to adjust the mixture screw as you should and it idles nicely and doesn't die out as you coast to a stop.
