I let my dad drive my kadett the other day and it was about 60 miles that he put on. He brings it back home I go out about ten minutes later and start it up to go to a friends. The yellow oil pressure light came on so and it started knocking like I broke a can bearing. I changed the oil and flushed it with alcohol and deisel. and it still doesnt get enough pressure to turn on the light and the knock is just bugging and scaring the hell out of me!

any ideas, thanks for the help to all.

sounds like its run a baring on the crank or big end on a rod
its pull it to bits time to find out which it is and dont run the engine as it will just do more damage

my 1.9 GT did the same thing this spring. was fine, went to slow down to turn, and let the clutch in to slow down and it died, so after dad took the corner, poped the clutch in 2nd and started it back up and it was just doggy all the way home and knocked like a bitch, spun the rod bearings for no apparent reason, altho it had been overheated quite a few times before that.

I've been thinking about this one. A spun bearing shouldn't change your oil pressure unless it completely let go of it. I would try a few things before I tore it apart. I would pull the distributor to see if your oil pump is able to turn and then turn it manually to see if you have anything. You can unscrew the filter and put a bucket under it to tell. If you have oil then tear it apart. No oil, reprime your pump and see what happens with oil. Your Dad may have just ran it dry. If so the suggestions I made cost you nothing to try. This is a 1.9 motor isn't it?

Just tryin to save you some trouble

hi nobody if the oil pump had gone then its best to pull rocker cover and crank the engine with the king lead(coil to dissy) pulled so he can see if theres any oil around {cover wings on each side of cam chain it will fly sideways if there is } if not then pump is dead but which ever way be it bearings or pump the bearings will be dead as they have been run with no oil and white metal will not live for more than a few seconds without oil
i agree that a spun bearing would still give some pressure but it would still need new bearings to repair it
so i guess im saying it will need new bearings
a new high vol oil pump wouldn't go amiss while its in bits

That's why I recommended to pull distributor first. No spark and if motor is damaged you don't need to keep spinning it, just the pump. I agree that it would be best to replace the bearings. Then again I was young and working on opels once. If I could keep my ride going until I could afford to rebuild it I did just that. It's nice to have a budget for what is for most of us, a hobby. Until somebody says different most of the younger people on this forum seem to be using the opels as almost daily drivers. I think it is great, but I also remember how tough it can be. When I did it I lived in the middle of nowhere, no internet and C&R was it for parts. Then again the car was 25 years newer to.

I hope it does turn out to be an easier fix. Just thinkin positive thoughts.

pump cover

Before you pull the dist, I'd pull the oil pump cover. Six 13mm nuts is all. Check for scoring or signs of wear, and replace with another or have it cut smooth by your local machine shop's big belt sander they use for heads. Do a little finish smoothing with some 600 grit, and then some polishing with steel wool or "green scratchies."
Toss the pump back together with your favorite prelube, then pull the distributer and prelube the system. One easy method is to get 18" or so of 3/8-1/2" rod, grind one end down to a flat screw-driver like point (match the end of the distributer) and chuck it into your drill. Spin the rod clock-wise and you should be able to build pressure.
A worn pump cover is a known weak link in the Opel oiling system, and not that uncommon. You guys with 25-30# of oil pressure going down the highway may be able to do the same thing to get into the 45#+ club.

I think it is a waste of time to start with the pump cover. It sounds like whatever happened, it happened "catastrophically", as in it was either overheated, over-revved, or ran without sufficient oil. While it may be interesting to pull the pump cover to check it for scoring, the reason more likely lies with excessive clearance somewhere. Such as a spun bearing. When a bearing spins, it wears out the inside of the bearing cap quite quickly, which will GREATLY increase clearance. And cause very low oil pressure.

Or it could be (but not likely) a oil passage plug has let go. Or a broken relief valve spring (probably wishful thinking). Or ???

It sounds like a tear-down is in order.

Another idea. What happens if that nylon cam bolt breaks? I had it happen and the cam floats around, made some bad noises when the cam barely caught the lifters. I don't remember what happened to the oil pressure but if the half moon groove isn't restricting it, the pressure could go up or down couldn't it? Put another spacer bolt in that one and it was good for quite a few more miles.

Maybe it's just me but I look for the stupid stuff first. While I'm doing that I either get the good or bad news. I plan for the worst but I do get the occassional suprise, that things aren't as bad as they first seemed.

do the pieces fit together like a puzzle dean, maybe you can try to piece them together if they were at one point in time a single piece and somebody could probaly then figure it out.
