I think it is a waste of time to start with the pump cover. It sounds like whatever happened, it happened "catastrophically", as in it was either overheated, over-revved, or ran without sufficient oil. While it may be interesting to pull the pump cover to check it for scoring, the reason more likely lies with excessive clearance somewhere. Such as a spun bearing. When a bearing spins, it wears out the inside of the bearing cap quite quickly, which will GREATLY increase clearance. And cause very low oil pressure.

Or it could be (but not likely) a oil passage plug has let go. Or a broken relief valve spring (probably wishful thinking). Or ???

It sounds like a tear-down is in order.
