Oil Cooler Specs

Opeler's,

I would like to add an oil cooler to my 1973 GT. I have used the search feature and found much discussion of the topic, however, no specifics regarding part numbers or sources. What is a good source for the "sandwich" plate? I plan to have oil lines fabricated locally and source the cooler via Summit racing. Has anyone modified the adapter (threaded central union that holds the plate to the original filter location) of the "sandwich" plate to work with a more readily available filter?

Thanks,
Brian

Uk

There are two sorts available for Opel Mantas in the UK. One has a thermostatic bypass and the other does not.
Here is a breif description of them from David Jackson's site on OpelTuners.

My 3.0E Senator has an oil cooler. So all the parts from one will fit the 1.9. Need to get it from the UK or Germany though.
After a little research I have learned that the adapter for the oil cooler is relatively easy to source since it is common to MG's (B's, Sprites and the like), and older Mini's. Since these cars were frequently raced the parts are available. My greater concern is that there does not appear to be room for the "sandwich" plate on the GT due to close clearance with the front crossmember.

Has anyone found one that will work?

Is a remote filter and cooler the only option?

Thanks,
Brian

What is the "Correct" thread size for the oil cooler sandwich adapter?

*Been told it is 3/4" -16.

Six (6) available spin-on oil filter thread sizes listed by USA Suppliers are:
3/4"-16; 13/16"-16; 1"-12; M18x1.5; M20x1.5; M22x1.5.

This lightweight, compact high flow sandwich plate incorporates a 180 deg. F thermostat to regulate oil flow to the cooler until the engine is properly warmed up. 1 5/16" thick with 1/2" NPT female ports. $79.99

Better to install "in-line" thermostat adapter in hoses or purchase sandwich adapter with an internal thermostat?

Yes it is.

Depends on clearance. A GT has minimal clearance as it is, and any AC equipped cars also have minimal clearance, so for those cars a remote thermostat is a better choice than a sandwich adapter which places the oil filter lower.
Could use sandwich adapter to add a remote oil filter in the GT nose area. Unless the sandwich adapter is ultra thin, oil filter will not fit GT due to cross-member interference.

Attempting to plumb a remote oil filter and oil cooler "in-line" would cause issues regarding temperature control of oil circulation through filter and cooler at same time. Or ... How is the system plumbed?

Awhile back, I purchased oil temp gauge from OPGTS. Installed sensor at bottom of timing cover as instructed. Need to install gauge in dash to see what my actual oil temperature is. Remote oil filter should allow oil temp to be cooler.

What have others done? Especially in warmer climates?

You can plumb a remote filter, then the thermostat, then the cooler. The cooler will only be in the loop when the temperature is reached that opens the thermostat. But you will always have filtered oil because it is before the thermostat. I have done this with many engines. There's a slight drop of oil pressure due to the lines and cooler, but the oil pressure regulator can be adjusted to compensate.

Dual Inlet & Dual Outlet Oil Filter Bracket

Would purchase remote filter bracket with dual inlet and dual outlet ports.
If oil cooler not immediately installed, plug extra inlet & outlet ports.
