i have took a non running 1.1L egine apart awhile back and noticed the oil pump was inside the engine.. is this the same way on the 1.9? my car reads 2.5 bars when i first start it up.. but then after a bit when it warms up it goes down to one bar at idle.. but if i go down the road it will go up to two bars.. then when i have to stop the idiot light comes on the pressure is so low.. but then it goes back up to one bar.. so is the gears and cover on the outside the engine? and if so if there more to it then taking off the old one.. and putting the new one on? and will this fix my problem?

P.S.. got all other kinks worked out.. and its running great!! and should i drive it like this, with oil pressure low???

The oil pressure is higher when the engine is cold becuase the oil is cold as well and more viscous, and when it warms up the oil flows easier because it becomes less vicsous. when you are driving you will have more oil pressure becuase chances are you are driving with the engine revving more than an idle rpm. New oil pump gears are not necessarily the solution becuase the timing cover housing which is aluminium wears more and before the gears. The oil pump is "inside" the engine in the sence that it is in the timing cover housing.

what i was meaning was.. can you see the cover part of the pump from the bottom of the car? the oil filter is on the passenger side, or atleast pointing to that side.. well if you go down to the bottom of the engine, where that cover thing is that has a bolt in it.. is that the cover plate for the oil pump? basically i need to know do i have to take the engine out to replace this?

its an aluminium plate on the front of the engine, just below the fuel pump. it has 6 10MM bolts that hold it in place with a 1" nut facing rear-ward off the side of it. it can be replaced without removing the engine and is referred to as a "external pump"

What is the big bolt right on the bottom of the housing for? The pressure relief valve is above the filter, right? I have a situation where when cold everything is fine, when the engine is warm, the idiot light comes on all the time. I read through some of the older posts and thought the relief valve might be the problem. I pulled it off, it was loose enough to unscrew by hand which I took as a bad sign. It didn't look bad, nothing wedged in the spring but you can't really see up into the hole. Anyway, put it back on tight, I couldn't find anywhere that said what the torque settings for it were, and same problem. So my problem isn't the relief valve? But there is another big bolt about the same size on the bottom of the housing, is that were the pump gears are? My repair book pictures don't show a big bolt affair. I didn't want to just pull it off and look inside. I can take a picture if that would help anyone.

that big bolt also has a pressure relief valve. there is a nylon "bullet" that seals onto an aluminium seat. that nylon bullet gets beat up an dont seal quite so well, and sometimes can become lodged open, which i have had happen to me. the gears are above that plate cover, your plate may also be worn from the steel gears rotating against the aluminium.
