kinda new

Well I have been lurking around back on the old opelgt.com site, and then when it changed I forgot my password and. blah, blah.
Anyway. I am George from Austin, TX. Owner of www.OpelGT.cc
not to be confused with www.OpelGT.com
I have a chrome yellow 1973 GT.
I, like others am tired of the low compression 1.9 that I have and would love to drop in a 2.4FI/5-sp. combo. I am debating wether to save my pennies and go the "plug and play" method or take the high compression 1.9 I have in boxes and on shelves and try to make it great. I have very little experience with the inside of engines and am not sure if I am capable of that venture. It would be cheaper and more gratifying, but oooh the 2.4FI!!
The body and interior on my car are perfect, so the drivetrain is where my money will go. Time is limited now too. I am a full time dad of a 3 month old boy (Wyatt)(www.rusts.org) and time in the garage comes in 5 minute intervals.
Anyway, check out my site (www.opelgt.cc) and please sign my guestbook.

Also how to I get a cool picture profile in my signature block?

Hi GGT, I believe as far as an engine you don't have to dicker with to get something out of and always being open for improvements you could not go wrong with the 2.4 FI , if your concerned with time and having not to spend countless hours on the car I would save pennies for a while and get as close as you can to a drop in set up . Obviously with a newer FI unit your going to be doing some rewiring unless you find someone that has already done it and is willing to sell you engine , tranny, fuse block, computer and all the works. Good luck with your baby! and as far as an Avatar in your info block resize your favorite pic to 72 pix by 72 pix or a relative size go to User CP (stands for Control Panel) then go to edit options at the bottom of the page you will find info on how to upload your Avatar...
Have fun either way you go with your car!

Hi, having just recently gone the 2.4 FI route I can say it's not necessarily easy. The work was done by someone who had done it many times already and it still took a lot of time and a lot of "the (fill in the blank) is bad, I'll have to have one sent from Germany". If not already done you'll also need a higher output alternator (fuel pump) and a three-core radiator because you don't want to overheat that expensive new engine. The fuel injection is the hard part. Alot of electrical work and parts that are hard to figure out why it won't work can be eliminated if you go with carb(s). I'm not what I consider a mechanic so I wanted something that shoud be trouble free once it was working. If you're mechanically inclined I'm pretty sure dual side-drafts will give you considerably more power than fuel injection.
Don't get me wrong, I love the car now that it's done-it's awesome. Just some thoughts, somebody else could probly give good advice about what you could do with a 1.9.
Good Luck!

Thanks for the input guys. I guess I didn't think about availability of parts for the 2.4. I thought most were similar/same as the 1.9.
Maybe the 1.9 transformed to a 2.4 Bob Legere style? With a little help of course.

Most all of the parts ARE interchangeable between the 2.4L and the 1.9L, the fuel injection will be the same pain the the butt weather you have a 1.9L or a 2.4L. It would be a lot more "painless" to use a DGAS carb or a holley 500 carb than to go the dual sidedraft or FI setups.

This is true in the sense that major assemblies interchange (i.e., you can put a 1.9 head on a 2.4 block). But to not confuse those out there who have never laid hands on a 2.4 as well as a 1.9, pretty much every internal part IS different. The block is different (larger bore on the 2.4, plus internally clearanced oil galleys for the larger stroke crankshaft), the crank is naturally different, the rods are different, the pistons too. Also, the valves are larger, the cam is different (NEVER put a 2.2 or 2.4 cam into a 1.9...the oiling system differences will starve the head otherwise!), the intake and exhaust manifolds are different (intakes do not interchange at all).

Probably the only parts which are universally interchangeable between those engines are the lifters, rocker studs, rocker arms, oil pump, cam and crank gears, and timing chain. Otherwise, every part is unique.

What car do you take your 2.4 cih's from?

I connect 5 allready under the hood wires.

1. to starter
2. to water temp
3. to oil lamp
4. to alternator lamp
4. from ignition to new engine electric net.

Then one wire from new engine electric net to the fuel pump. Optional is the green one to the rpm gauge inside.

Wondering, because it was not that diffecult, but this engine came with two different fuel injection systems, mine is a bosch motronic.
