Hello Opel GT owners.

I was wondering if there is a 5 speed transmission, that i could install that doesen't require cutting and welding?
I am changing alot of parts from the car, but my rule has always been, that any change i make, i must be able to undo.

So when changing the engine I'm changing to a CIH 2.2 and keeping the original engine, so i could always swap back.

I dont mind buying an extra part, like the driveline if that needs to be modified, but i dont wanna cut or weld into any part that cant be changed back.

Hope my question makes some what sence to you.

I drive a Opel GT 1972 US model, 4 speed with the original 1.9 engine (changing to 2.2E CIH)

Kind regards from Denmark.

A getrag 5 speed from a Manta B or Rekord E 2.0/2.2 cih is a direct fitment. Should be easy enough to find one in Denmark. There are modifications needed detailed on link from forum below.

4 speed Crossmember & propshaft can be modified to suit but if you get a Prop & crossmember from an automatic GT they fit directly to 5 speed.

Opel GT source in US do complete conversion kit.

I got Mount for transmission from Splendid parts when I did mine.

Suselbeek also have 5 speed parts,

Viktor,

Getrag 240 is the easy answer, though you have to shorten the driveshaft and get it balanced or purchase one that is the right length from one of the Opel GT parts stores, plus modified speed mount, bracket, five speed linkage and a maybe a new box to bell house dust shield..- and then you are good to go.

However I'm a little concerned on your behalf about the CIH 2.2. Rumors says it suffers from weak pistons, that tends to go bad even with low mileage, and maybe (only maybe) you'll face problems with Danish MOT. They tend to hold a grudge against engine swaps in general and also when we are speaking about classic cars.

Cheers from a native Dane.

In Europe, the Getrag is the best choice. Lots of options there.
No cutting or welding to the frame is involved.

Charles rarely visits the forum. It's easier to find him on Facebook. He'll be doing one last import from Europe, 2.4L engines and Getrag 240s. If you want a Getrag, it will cost you $1,200.

Should, but isnt so much any more. My guy in Poland has been looking and found a few over the last year. BUt thats someone there and he runs a shop and is looking. He finds an occasional transmission. BUt the cars that came witht eh transmissions are rare now. As there are very few junkyards in europe.

Also finding one and then having someone ship one.. two different things as well.. Just saying.

I have a few used coming, $1200.

Expect them in come November, trying to have everythign bought before the crate hits my garage. I dont have room to store, so I don't. I simply help solve the finding and bringing over issue.
