a short answer...

A performance header is one that is tuned for a specific rpm range and engine power levels. Modern day headers have primary and collector pipe sizes that are selected to use the energy available in the first order pressure (positive) and reflected (negative) sonic waves to improve cylinder filling so that volumetric efficiencies of greater than 100% are achieved. A stock exhaust manifold typically is designed to cost less to manufacture and simplify the assembly requirements. Also it tends to mute the first and second order energy waves.
