I've waited my whole life for the opportunity to mention 'metered orifice' and 'windy hole' in the same sentence...

Stanley_P and my uncle both have 73's - strangely enough, neither one has a 'windy hole'. If my info is correct - 71-75 GT's have a 7.6:1 compression ratio instead of the 9:1 on earlier models.

Does anybody have a 9:1 compression 1.9L+ that does not have a windy hole???

Your information is correct in the sense that early gt's (68-71) had high compression engines about 9:1, but it is also inaccurate to say that 71-75 gt's had a 7.6:1 compression ratio as 74 and 75 gt's never existed.

'74, '75 whatever it takes...

Excellent point! I was referencing an OMC article titled 'Opel CIH: Engine Compression Test' that refers to 71-75 7.6 engines. Too much GT on the brain - or I could blame it on excessive carbon monoxide in the cabin.:veryhappy

The '74 Manta that I owned had a "windy hole" from the time it was new. The VEGE-Motoren european rebuilt motor I bought in the mid '80s to replace the Manta's motor did the same thing (and it had flat top pistons with eyebrow cuts). The '72 GT I currently have also does it (even after I restored the PCV circuit). I have always assumed it was normal.

Unplugged dipstick question

I've come across a 75 Ascona which has clearly run for an extended period of time (years) with the oil dipstick not seated, but sitting on top of the tube. Anyone have any thoughts on the long term effects of operating with that dipstick tube not plugged very securely?

Very funny.
You're probably right. Judging the quantity of dirt I found on and in this car (enough to start my own corn field I thought) this car might be responsible for keeping the rust down across the entire state of Iowa.
