I have seen a few threads about people who are planning to pull the engine/tranny using a trans jack as opposed to lowering it out with a hoist.

How did it work? any tips? Can I drop the engine and trans in one piece with this method?

You will just have to lift the whole car up high enough to get the trans jack under the motor/gbox at the balance point. Make sure the car is absolutely rock solid on what ever you prop it up on!

The method you propose would be very good under a two post car hoist as long as the trans jack is rated high enough to take the weight of the total motor/trans unit ( about 500 pounds ).
