Quaife Rear End

10053 Views 39 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  FrankDaTank
If anyone has ordered a quaife rear end, can you let me know what came with it? I appears in all the web pictures that there is no ring gear. I can't imagine it running without one. Did the pinion gear come with it? What else did you have to purchase to installit? I would imagine that a professional installation would be preferable. I would appreciate any answers any one may have.

Thanks,
Bob Joseph

Quaife rear end

The Quaife is sold as just the center section, no bearings, alignment spacers or ring gear. I'm using the stock 3.44 ring gear and pinion aligned for correct backlash in a '72 rear end. If you go to a higher ratio, you'll have to use a spacer between the ring gear and center section. HTH

ATB Differentials
The unique design of the QUAIFE patented A.T.B. differential provides smooth constant traction for racing or slippery road conditions.

Suitable as a replacement for any rear or four wheel drive application, these differentials have the added benefit of no adverse effect on the steering of a front wheel drive vehicle. The A.T.B. differential is widely used from Formula 1 to emergency vehicles and public utilities where all weather mobility is essential.
Available to suit a very wide range of vehicles, including Ford, BMW, Mercedes, Land Rover/Range Rover and light commercials. The differential progressively locks as torque increases; there are no plates or clutches to wear out as more conventional limited-slip designs. Is particularly effective in combating the effects of FWD torque steer.

The Ultimate Differential

The QUAIFE Automatic Torque Biasing Differential enables your car to accelerate quicker and corner faster.
How? By getting the power to the ground!

The QUAIFE Differential powers both drive wheels under nearly all conditions, instead of just one.

With an ordinary open differential, standard on most cars, a lot of precious power is wasted during wheel spin under acceleration. This happens because the open differential shifts power to the wheel with less grip, along the path of least resistance.

The QUAIFE, however, does just the opposite. It senses which wheel has better grip, and biases the power to that wheel. It does this smoothly and constantly, and without ever completely removing power from the other wheel.
In cornering, while accelerating out of a turn, the QUAIFE biases greater power to the outside wheel, reducing inside-wheel spin. This allows the driver to begin accelerating earlier, exiting the corner at a higher speed.

The QUAIFE also controls loss of traction when the drive wheels are on slippery surfaces such as ice and snow or mud, providing the appropriate biased traction needed to overcome these adverse conditions. The QUAIFE Differential provides constant and infinitely variable drive. Power is transferred automatically without the use of normal friction pads or plates seen in other limited-slip designs.

The QUAIFE'S unique design offers maximum traction, improves handling and steering, and puts the power where it is needed most. A definite advantage whether on the track or on the street.

The QUAIFE is extremely strong and durable and since the Quaife is gear operated, it has no plates or clutches that can wear out and need costly replacement.

The QUAIFE is great for street driving or racing. Racers don't have to put up with locking mechanisms or spools that tear the steering wheel out of their hands when cornering. Because it behaves like an open differential during ordinary driving, street drivers will have trouble telling it's there until pushing the cars limits.

The QUAIFE has been proven in everything from SCCA Rally to Formula 1. It provides autocrossers with such an advantage, it has become "required" equipment for a winning effort.

Expand your vehicle's limits with the QUAIFE Differential!

RE: Quaife rear for Opels

IMPORTANT!! Everyone should be aware that the version they offer is for the 3.18/3.44 gear sets only. Not a bad thing, but if you want to use 3.67 (33:9) or higher ratios, you'll have to use a 4mm spacer as R-Bob said in another post and I said earlier in this thread.
Interesting Otto....the Quaife differential I have is for the 3.67 and numerically higher! But that was from many years ago, and they said thjey didn't have an application for the 3.44's. Hmmm, they must've decided there are a lot more 3.44 equipped cars out there.

Phew! It's a relief you said that, Bob.... now I'm sure the one I have is for 3.67-up, too. At the time several years ago, the dealer said I would need to take "5mm off" if I wanted to use 3.44 and numerically lower.

Thought I was going crazy since I knew I didn't have a 4mm shim in there.

I spoke with Dave Stoner(auto-Xer from PA) about 5 years who had just purchased the last Quaife of the last batch. He decided to send it back as he didn't want to go to the effort of removing any material off from his stock parts. I don't think Quaife changed the design...

I've always wondered what happened to him. He was a regular at the Carlisle show until 4 or 5 years ago and I've not seen him since. Though I didn't make it last year.

See what you missed Travis. (of course you had the best excuse!!)

Dave is in the middle.
Without looking closely, I wouldn't have recognized him. Looks like he's lost some weight.

I hope to see him, and possibly race him in a few months...

Quaife-England and Demon Tweeks, also in England, told me at the time I purchased it there that it was for the 3.44 gears and I measured it against my stock center section, to which it is identical. That's why I bought that 4mm spacer from you, Bob . . . remember? This way, no matter how I eventually decide to go, I'm set.

Quaife-NA wasn't too interested in my business at the time, seeing it was for an Opel, and they said they'd have to get it from England in any case, as they had none in stock. I ordered it from Demon Tweeks, Quaife's distributor there, on Monday morning, paid $587 including shipping and it was here at my door in Texas on Wednesday at ~5:30PM! Needless to say, I was flabbergasted. ;)

Yea, Demon Tweeks (UK) rocks! I found out about them in '85, and have found that often they are not only cheaper than buying comparable parts from the US (even with shipping), but often the same parts can be had quicker than ordering from US parts sources! They know how to keep the customer happy. Great selection too. Too bad the weakening dollar has lessened the savings ratio though.

I read this yesterday and since I am verry interested in an LSD unit for my car,I emailed Demon Tweeks asking for a price quote and got this ...

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your enquiry, however I cannot supply to you.
Quiafe have dealers in America, you need to contact them with your requirements.
[email protected] is the address you need to try.

Limited slip unit.

Here you go, if you have a 3.67 differential. It's not a Quiafe, but it's not $600, either.

Demon Tweeks and Quaife

Steve Kerr is the same guy I dealt with at the time, but the Quaife WAS still listed for Manta A (Vauxhall) back then . . . it's NOT! listed now, in their 2005 Catalog. :(
Quaife Pricing

Sorry for the mistake on the price for the Quaife. They're not $600, they list for $1,495.

Makes the one that I sold for $625, seem like a bargain. Bill H., you got a deal! What's new in Wisconsin?

Later....
Quaife-US

When I talked with them at the time, the Ascona/Manta A unit was listed at ~$1225 here at the time and, even at that price, they were just not terribly interested in getting one for me! :( Sometimes it pays to check ALL sources that may be available!
I guess I should feel guilty for buying my new Quaife for $380 back when the exchange rate was better, Rodney Quaife was still alive, and Quaife sold stuff to the US direct.
I have been in correspondence with Bill at Bildon Motorsport <[email protected]> the past week concerning purchase of a Quaife LSD. Bildon's price is $1350.00 delivered. I also asked him about the 3.44/3.67 issue -- he contacted Quaife NA who is waiting on a reply/clarification from Quaife UK -- "probably Monday." I asked Bildon about a discount on an order of multiple units, but they haven't responded.
I'll keep you posted.

Ken

PS -- Baz, thanks for your checking/researching Quaife UK for pricing and availability.
ken i will ring them tomorrow and ask if you want its a local toll #
