uhmmm. i was wondering... i have a gt from 69. and it is an europe one. but i don't have this red light at all (haven't found it that is.) can it be that a european gt doesn't have a light for the brakes?
and where is that light? i tought it was in the center console by the switches?

aha well now i know where it is. but i really don't have it. here's a pic. i do not have a MC what has that connection for the cable. (a bit confusing cause workshop manual only has than one in it. and it's a little different)
but i'm almost sure it had to be like this. and i told a mechanic at work and he didn't heared of it too..

I thought you were thinking of the red light next to the dash turnsignal indicators. This lights up when you have a MC failure(uneven pressure) or when you press the rocker switch.

I've seen some GT's where the red light you pictured Baz that lights up when the dash lights are on. As far as my GT goes, the light in the rocker switch has never lit up('early 72 but would be titled as a '71 in europe).

If the MC has been replaced in Europe the port will be missing to reinstall the switch. They did not use it there. If you have a imported USA car then the replacement MC has to be imported as well.

Tom, Euro models do not have the chamber below the MC main piston bore for the differential pressure switch for the brake lite. It is the US MC that has the lower chamber. HTH.
thanks. this was what i tought. but wasn't sure... it would be a nice thing i guess.

I believe it tells you if you are sending unequal pressure to the front and back wheels, indicating you are starting to experience braking failure.

You are correct, I was being sarcastic. I would hope most drivers would know they were having brake troubles without having an idiot light. Americans must be perceived to be less intelligent than Europeans since they didn't have the brake failure warning light. :haha:

harold dont make it to easy:lmao:
most of the indicators you get in a car are to comply with litigation stuff (look at http://www.opelgt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8566)
when i started to drive (just after they changed from steam to petrolium)
my first car had an idiot light to say the oil was gone one to say it was hot and the tell tale for the dynamo + a speedo so you could keep within the law . today i am trying to work out how to rework a dash from electronic to cable for a speedo , remove the rev counter as the new engine uses altenator out put to guess the revs and not a sensor mounted by the flywheel, bypass the service light system as i can play conect 4 on it and dont have anyway to run sensors for it so i will be back to the dash in my 1963 car

I belive the additional lights are just for revenue generation. My inlaws won't drive the car if the "service engine" light comes on. They get a tow truck, pay $$ for the mechanic to tell them that their gas cap wasn't on tight:confused: If people just took a little time to understand what things mean, they could save themselves a lot of grief.

The best one is when I see a SUV with a flat tire and the driver is calling some to come out to change it. AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

OK, off my soapbox now.

Pull the Plug ....

Just pull the wire off the master cylinder - believe me , you will know when your brakes fail ...... even without the USA type 'idiot' light!:D

BTW: Japanese laws require that light too..........:p

My 1972 auto GT has that type of master cylinder and the light.

Roads are OPEN here...you can drive for hours and not touch your brakes, so sometimes a light is a good thing! If you're on some European windy road, having to hit the brakes every few yards, it's probably easier to tell when your brakes are starting to fail. Luckily, there are lots of windy roads here too in many places :yup: , but overall you gotta go with the averages.

Baz, I don't know which way you're going on your speedo, mechanical drive to electrical input or electrical input to mechanical drive. But here's a link to the folks that allowed me to hookup the T-5 tranny output to the GT speedo. HTH.
