This is correct, the 1.1 does come out from the top.
Can be done even without any major lifting eq.. Back in the 70's I would remove the transmission, bellhousing, exhaust pipe, and intake/carbs. This would reduce the weight so that you could manually lift the engine with only a couple of straps. Lift the engine high enough to clear the body and slide a piece of plywood over the engine bay - covering fenders with protective cloth- at this point I would just roll the engine over to me and carry it into the basement. Wouldn't try it this way now, but it shows how light the 1.1 is in comparison to the 1.9.

Old Saying...

"When all else fails - read the instructions!" ;)
The Factory Service Manual is utterly invaluable and answers most questions - Glad you have one! However, don't hesitate to ask if anything is unclear as there are heaps of us here who have read the manual and then still had to find out the hard way how to do stuff!

Oto, you got ani of dem spel cheque progrems lefd ovr? :D (just funnin', Mike; Otto is the site's own spell checker, in case you hadn't heard the stories)

Actually, since Gary has installed a Spell Check program, it's quite easy to do a quick correction. Except I believe that it doesn't function for the very first post in a thread. My preference is an aftermarket IE spell checker called "IeSpell", which can be downloaded for free (an I believe it to be spy ware-free) at www.iespell.com.
