Things are a little different this afternoon

I just noticed the change to that a minute ago and knew that this thread would be headed back up to the top. I agree that the adds are a good way of paying for the site. I have not checked any long threads yet this afternoon, but, on another site they run that I am a member of, they only have about five posts per page. More pages, more adds. Some of our longer threads are going to turn into novels,

The site is now noticeably slower due to all the ads. I understand the need for this change, but I already don't like it. And I agree, get that ad out of our LOGO

I hear ya Jeff, I noticed the banner ad at the top of the page first thing today. I don't have the ad in the logo others seem to have (at least not yet). I expected some changes, but I will watch carefully to see if it gets worse. If it becomes lethargically slow like some of the Nissan sites I used to belong to (that got bought out), I just won't visit much anymore.

I'm not too worried, only 1732 more posts before I retire anyway:haha:. At my current average, that's just 690 days!

The Blocksite plug-in for firefox is helping here. It needs to have the blocked sites added manually so takes some time to tweak. The only site I haven't been able to get rid of is the stupid facebook and associated fbcdn sites. It's actually running faster now than when Gary was in charge.

This list might help get you started with it. If you save it to a text file you can import it to BlockSite. Hope this doesn't get me booted.

Thank you, I installed the BlockSite Add On, went to extensions in the add-on editor and cut and pasted all the sites above into blocksite. for some reason it would not let me import the whole text file. For those of you who don't know how to copy the list to a text file, just hi-lite the whole list and right click and choose copy, open up wordpad or any other text editor, right click and paste, then make sure you save as a text file with the .txt extension. You can also just use [Control + C] (copy) and [Control + V] (paste) for the copy and paste function. The site is now closer to what it was before the "improvement" :ugh:

PS. If you disable warning messages in the blocksite options it will stop the little bar at the top from popping up stating that some sites have been blocked

To make the site pay for itself by using ads is a good thing, but putting an ad in the site banner is just one ad too much and should be considered a no-no! :thumbsdow

. . . straight and to the point, I'm an artist and therefore a very visual person. I'm also very direct, oft to my own detriment, but want no 'misunderstanding', a waste of my time.

A viewer's first impression of any site's home page will dictate his opinion of it from that point forward. It is very difficult to change from that point on. The same thing goes for existing members of that site that return for the first time to MAJOR visual changes made to that home page. You're perhaps familiar with the old adage, "It takes only one 'aw-s**t' to wipe out ten 'atta-boys'!", right?!

I'm sure you know this, but it appears that it bears repeating here. In your first missive to us, you state that you wish to help ". . . make this site grow by leaps and bounds." A week into your "management", your number-one, over-riding priority appears to be to get your ad revenue stream and self-promotion on-line and visible on OUR home page as quickly as possible! In the first week, you change the site banner by overlaying your active banner in the center of ours . . .

. . . REALLY!

A lot of thought and effort must have been expended on that . . . about two minutes worth of any decent HTML coder. I'm sure you're "just following company policy" here, but want you to know that you've managed in one short week to accomplish something never before seen here, the slippery slope down to "ordinary, run-of-the-mill, nothing special" status.

Helena, this is in no way a personal attack on you . . . I don't know you well enough yet for that! The decisions made here are never made by a lone individual or in a vacuum. I also do not speak for anyone other than myself here. I'm sure that my views are not too far off the mark and shared by any number of other members, both old-timers and newbies. That said, I now cede the floor to you . . .

There was LOT of thought and several members had input on the banner at the top of our home page. I understand that 'AutoGuide' needs to be on the page, but over the top of the banner?

To echo Otto and Harold, this is just not acceptable.
What set this site apart was the feeling of 'family', and keeping it all homespun, which is in no way being disrespectful to Gary. It is (was) homespun but professional.
To start down the corporate slope is spelling disaster, the bulk of the active users on here know each other personally, so it's not your typical semi-anonymous website...
Helena, you need to sit down with Gary and get a better feel for this site before you implement any more 'changes' and as a gesture of goodwill, I strongly suggest you get that banner ad off our logo pronto.
Rob.

Well, this is new!

I get back from a nasty few days at work and found this. No respect I tell you.

A friend of mine always said that " Every thing in life is a comodity, ready to be traded"

and I guess the best is yet to come. But not to worry, better ads will be popping in anytime soon! :haha:

Well, either we are in a HARD left turn, or they're trying a new location.

At least it looks like they are trying.

Remember guys this is not a "fix" or solution to the ad problem. Not cramming adds down visitors throats is the goal. Ads are fine if they are not rudely placed, inappropriate, nor overwhelming to the site. These basic rules of etiquette have already been violated. Our solution is to install software to block it? That flies in the face of what this site has stood for from its inception. I hope this is not the beginning of the end.
