I am getting ready to have my gas tank hot tanked and maybe lined.

How is the sock filter inside the tank removed ? I have removed the
fitting but the filter is still in there.

I think it should be out to have the tank cleaned and for sure if the
tank is to be lined.

Help !

If your gonna have the fuel tank hot tanked, then you also need to remove the sending unit on the top of the tank. With a flash light you can see the nylon type sock over the fitting. Once you get the sock off the fitting, however you do it, a set of mechanical fingers should be able to snag it and you can pull it out through the sending unit hole. I removed mine in about 3 pieces, it can be stubborn to remove. HTH. :(

Here is Otto's patented "Fuel Sock Removal Tool". I made one quite easily out of a old hack saw blade, ground down to make it a bit narrower, and then bent to make a right angle with a serrated edge. Think of it as a right angle saw. Or grind the edge with a sharp edge. Either way, it is used to cut the sock around the bottom where it attaches to the tank fitting. Then you either do what Otto shows by retrieving it out the bottom fitting, or follow Ron's advice and retrieve it out the top (is this an engine? :) ) through the sending unit hole. In this case, it's a LOT easier out the top when the tank is already out.
