I have about 5000-6000 miles on a rebuilt engine......broken in nicely and never overheated. I just noticed a VERY small line of rust down the side of the block just behind the # 3 plug, probably a small head gasket leak. I've checked the head bolts and all are at 72 lbs, cold. My question is......is there ANY stop-leak product on the market that would be safe to use in a small quantity to try and seal this leak before it gets bigger??

I know its not the method of repair but I'm not thrilled about the idea of taking the head back off already, especially IN the car.

Suggestions appreciated.

Thanks Bob,

I guess the one question I've had was whether it would impair the engine's ability to cool itself....i.e. coat the iron so the coolant wouldn't really be contacting it. Nevada summers are brutal and it's always a concern. I just looked up the Ceramic Seal and apparently it won't work if antifreeze is present.......but they do have another type that is compatible with antifreeze.

Thank you both for some solutions, I appreciate it.

I finally decided on a stop leak for my cooling system and figured I'd pass the results along. It is from C&R Racing and does not coat the cooling system but rather drains out with the coolant...so must be added every time coolant is changed. Seems like it was about $6 for a bottle...the GT took one bottle. It immediately stopped the head gasket seep, which admittedly was minor.....but does not seem to have resulted in a hotter running engine. A good test will be this summer's drive to the OMC picnic.
