Solex or Weber? If it's a Solex, get a Weber...

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Do search on same and there are lots of helpful threads

can check the timing. line up the ball bearing to the notch in the window on the bellhousing passengers side.

Surging and backfiring

Help please... 69 GT idles fine and revs up without incident... But when driving it starts to surge and backfire.... Tried spraying carb cleaner around carb and hoeses in fact replaced hoses no difference... Weber carburators....

try looking at your igintion points in the distributor make sure they are gapped correctly and check the wires goign from cap to cyls and cap to coil.HTH

No worries, I just wanted to remind you, was all...
Glad you found the culprit. SO many conditions get blamed on a vacuum leak that are something else altogether, but yours just seemed to fit.
