I couldn't resist this. This is part of article from the local paper this morning. Yup. Its cold baby. Afflicted me too. Cherokee won't start and I have a frozen pipe in the house.
The boss just told me he just checked and we are warmer than Churchill Manitoba...home of the polar bear watchers!

Scientist says South Pole is warmer than North Dakota
By the Associated Press
Allan Ashworth says his visit to Antarctica was like a tropical getaway from his hometown of Fargo.

The North Dakota State University geology professor recently returned from six weeks at the bottom of the world, about 300 miles northeast of the South Pole.

"It was balmy compared to here," Ashworth said, by telephone from Fargo on Wednesday.

Gary Enslinger, a biologist at the 59,000-acre J. Clark Salyer National Wildlife Refuge near Upham, in northern North Dakota, said temperatures there reached 41 below early Wednesday, with a wind chill factor of 71 below.

That is pretty dang cold! I thought it was cold here in mid-michigan, its been gettin down to about 15 or 20 below everynight. This had been the hardest winter we've had in a long time! We have about 1 1/2 feet of snow, maybe pushin 2. I love it, so far we have had 4 snow days at school :-D

Yup, I was stationed at Grand Forks AFB for 5 1/2 years in the early 60s. The only month it did not snow in that time was August. I have seen roof top to roof top snow drifts between the aircraft hangers, and they are really tall. One time the chill factor was -200 degrees, exposed skin would freeze in under 10 seconds, and we had to do pre-flight inspections on the jets in this weather, by relay teams. By contrast I got stationed in the high New Mexico and CA deserts and while there, the flight line temp was measured at 150 degrees. So go ahead and ask me why I live inSANe DIEGO.

Jon: i'm also in michigan, near kalamazoo and it is cold, feel bad for the colder places. 3 snowdays here, same temps, foot of snow, drifts up to 4-5 foot high. maybe in the spring we can find some more people from our area and have a "michigan get together"?

I live 8 miles from Embarrass Mn which is officially dubbed the "Nations Icebox" Thier temps last night were near -50 without wind chill and I had -42 at home. I backed out of the garage this morning and my stupid rear brakes froze to the rotors on my truck. I had to put it in 4 wheel drive to get the beast rolling. The bright side is that it's warmed up 20 degrees already, the bad thing is that it's still damn cold!

Sauna?

Holy Smkoes! You're right in the middle of Fin country. Can you say Laplander? Time to fire up the old sauna. Reminds me of a winter survival trip we took in college. To your neck of the woods...Boundary waters. 7 days. Coldest raw temps they had seen in over 10 years. Breakfast consisted of something called hot Gorp. 1/4 stick of butter in each Sierra cup. Sounds gross but man did you need the calories. Slept and a piece of plastic on the ground. Finally figured out a wakeup routine. Open sleeping bag just enough to put on the Sorels then run like hell down to the lake in your long johns and do a fast jumping jacks then run back.

Last night in the field we took a REAL (woodburning) sauna with wool socks on. Why the socks you ask?
Because you had to run down to the lake and jump into a hole cut in the ice. Wool socks protected your feet from getting cut by the ice crystals.

First one sucked.. big shock. Third dunk, I actually stayed in the water a bit. Then stood on the lake with a buddy butt naked (except the socks) in the middle of February for 20 minutes admiring the Northern lights. AAhhh college days:D

Jared, that would be great! I wonder how many Opel Owners there are in Michigan? We would have to do quite a bit of planning to where we did this, and arrangments for it. I get out of school around June 12, maybe a little after that because of the snow days, but it shouldnt be too much after that. Email me if you feel like talkin about it private

About 8 years ago I took the snowmobile to the cabin on a nice crisp night and fired up the sauna. We had just got a lot of snow so after heating up in the sauna we were jumping off the roof into the drift (of course buck naked). When I was digging out of the snow I backed into the side of the cabin and my wet cold butt froze to the wall instantly (steel siding). It was kind of like the movie Cristmas Story only in a ******* version. A little warm water got me off but man did that suck!
