Ubernoob’s GT Update

Hi folks! It’s Ubernoob!

It’s been a while since I’ve posted, just wanted to give a bit of a status update on the GT.

If you read The Blitz (highly recommended) you may have heard that I crashed my GT.

Yes, last January I was driving in the rain, locked up my brakes behind a car, and rear-ended it. I bent the nose of the GT and punctured the radiator (I think it moved in its’ mounts and hit the fan).

I replaced the radiator, and have slowly been working on the bodywork with a friend. The GT does run and drive, I fire it up every so often and putt around the yard just to charge the battery and keep things lubed up.

I plan on finishing the bodywork and doing paint in the spring.

But in the meantime, I found someone who bought OpelSpyder’s AC kit and never used it. I bought the kit from them and am picking it up tomorrow! So excited, I’ve wanted AC in the GT since forever, and when this came up, it was a deal I couldn’t pass up. Now I get to realize every classic Opeler’s dream of working air conditioning!

I may start a thread in the tech forums documenting the installation, we’ll see.

So just wanted to let everyone know myself and the GT are doing OK, and that hopefully I’ll be posting here more often.

Good to hear from you again!
Thanks Viny! How’s your GT running?
After the third complete engine rebuild last June (Grrrr) , I've since racked up over 4000 kms by October and all seemed well....Hopefully all that is finally behind me.

Also finally installed and Air / fuel ratio gauge..

How bad was the damage on your car? Do you have pictures?

Thank god it wasn't too bad! She looks all straighten out now.

Painting it same colour?
Going with the factory color: Jade Mist.
Nice camouflage! Just put clear coat over it! ;)

Good luck with the AC! I have a thread detailing most of the install. I thinks it’s called “installing New vintage AC with ARA AC” or something like that.

Do you have a paint chip or an example of it?

Thanks Kyler! Helpful as always!

And yeah, I browsed your AC thread in preparation for the install. Good stuff.

It's been a while since I've updated this thread, but progress continues on the GT.

So I got a job over 2 years ago, and while I was working I paid one of the guys at work to do bodywork on the car and primer it.

I got the car back about a year ago, after I quit working (long story) and wasn't totally satisfied. Luckily a friend from work offered to paint the car for free, providing I bought the paint and clearcoat for him.

While working on getting the car prepped, it was discovered that the last guy didn't do the best job, and that the steel near the "trunk" seams had cracked and needed to be welded and the body work in that area re-done.

My friend who agreed to paint the car suggested that his cousin (another guy from the same work, great guy) do the bodywork and some prep work for a good price. I agreed, the cracks were welded by another friend from my old job, and the body work progressed to the pictures I'm posting now:

The paint sample on the paint can lid:

One of the cracks before welding:

Overall I'm really glad work on the car is progressing and I think my buddies are doing a good job.

Thanks Gordeaux! I can't wait 'til the paint's done, then I can bring the car home and install my new headliner, stainless bumpers, new Italian-style steering wheel, big brake kit, and other goodies! It'll be one sweet GT once I get it back together!

Good catch, Ubernoob! Those two rear deck body seams are always a real problem area for rust, etc.
I think those rear seams and the tail panel trim strip are just rust waiting to happen. I routinely have the seams filled and blended with the body and remove the trim strip and have the seam and gazillions of holes filled in also.
