well sometimes its not that easy to just count the wires. look at the newer ford rangers there 4 cyl. has 2 plugs for each cyl. and if you count the plugs you'd think that it is a v8. correct me if im wrong, im pretty sure that the way it is in my buddy's truck....

the 2.3 liter 4 banger rangers do have 2 plugs per hole. if you know what your looking at its really easy to tell how many cylinders

plugs is usually good indicator along with how many wires, its really easy to tell by counting intake/exhaust ports in the manifolds.
