Just picking brains, My blue GT is titled as a 1971, Vin # 942174767, my question is, Did they make a late 70 and maybe title iit as a 71, every thing on this GT shows as a 70 :yup: non opening back windows, GM emblem under back window, OT emblems on front fenders,and so on :confused:
A GT with VIN 94..... is build 1968 to 1970/6
1971 models came with VIN 77....

Well, the fact that the VIN starts with 94 instead of 77 screams that it is a 1970 or 1969 model. The 1971 model year for the GT started with 772265862 according to the Opel parts book. So, your GT is definitely a model year 1970 car. Bill

That is what messes with my mind, It is titled as a 71 here in Indiana, I thought maybe it was a real late 70,but when it was sold it my have been early 71 :ugh:
I don't put a whole lot of faith in how the state describes a vehicle. Back in the day, I bought a used Isuzu-built "Opel by Buick." However, the title called it a Pontiac. Since the VIN on the title was right, when I titled it, I asked to have the title changed to Opel, which they did without hesitation. Bill

38 = Limousine 2 door Sedan L
39 = Caravan 2 door L

I know this is crazy, but 12 years later I found your post excellent. I wish I knew how to decode the rest of the VIN on older 1960's Opel's. Thanks for what you gave me.:haha:

I wish there was more to the VIN decoding for pre 1980 Opel's. Having a 1964 Open Kadett I would love to find out what the other numbers mean. I appreciate this though.

Is there any way to decode the numbers that is on the plate under the hood? The one with all the 3 digit numbers? i guess it tells what parts that the car were equipped with and so on.
I need to know since i want to restore my Ascona B to as original as possible. If anyone have a link to a (free) part catalogue (teilekatalog) i would be very happy if you can send it to me :)

Don't know if these will help, but you might give them a try if you have not already

The problem with that decoder is that it needs 17 characters but my 73 GT only has 13 characters. Won't work...

Roy,

It was covered several posts ago that you can’t build a VIN decoder for our cars.

The most we can do is say what exterior and interior colors were factory. And what model and engine are in the car.
