I searched, but didn't find anything to answer the question. I know several members have installed the Denso type alternator and I want to do the same.

First, what do you have to do to mount the Denso alternator? It appears that there is a mounting bracket on the alternators, but it is rather narrow. What did you use for a bracket?

Also what type of Denso alternator did you get. I would like it to be chrome. I have seen many on Amazon, but I am reluctant to get it yet with so many unanswered question. Any advice or comments would be appreciated. I am kind of up against the wire, I want to make Kool April Nites in Redding, CA, Hope I can get some information before I leave Wednesday morning. Going right past Summit Racking on the way.

Thanks,
Bob

Dieter: I have read through those threads, lots of information. The alternator that I want to put in the GT is smaller (physical size), They are not car specific. Take a look at the link:

[ame]http://www.amazon.com/LActrical-OUTPUT-CHROME-ALTERNATOR-WARRANTY/dp/B00BP0Y6LI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1429581211&sr=8-1&keywords=chrome+one+wire+denso+alternator[/ame]

The reason I want to use this one is the size. It's only 5 1/2 inches long, five inches from the mount to the back, and just under 4 inches thick. This would fit nicely. The only thing I see as a challenge is the mount. If you look at the pictures in the link, it only has one tab to mount the alternator. The tab is only 7mm wide. I don't think that is enough to keep the alternator in place without breaking the mounting tab. I don't know if a GM type mounting bracket would work. I appears that the mounting bracket goes around the alternator to hold in place without breaking the mounting tab. They come in 70 amps which is more than I need any way. They are a little pricey but what the heck, it's only more money in the black hole.

So I guess my main question is what do I use for a mounting bracket? It is interesting that it doesn't have a second mounting tab like most other alternators. I am hoping someone has made the switch and I would like to know if it was a store bought bracket or did they have to make one, and if they made it, how?

I would just like to be able to have a smaller alternator and this one fits the bill, unfortunately there isn't too much information on the brackets, at least none that I could find to apply to my 2.4 engine. Probably not too much of a market for Opel brackets.

Dan, yes that's a hot one alright, might even go that route before its over. Do you have any information on brackets? Seems like that is the weak part of the upgrade for me right now.

Lindsay, good find, it looks pretty rugged and pretty easy to install. I will be taking pictures for anyone interested. With the size of a denso type alternator it should be an easy install. Thanks, I am going to order it and will go from there.

What happened?
Lindsey, actually it is being put on this week the bracket and the alternator. I am not doing the work. After getting my GT running, I took it to Kool April Nites in Redding, CA. Great car show. I couldn't get the GT to idle so I took it to my buddies mechanic, he only works on vintage cars. He got the idle as close as he could, but there was a big puddle of oil under the car, so that took care of my car show aspirations. Bob, the mechanic said the GT had intake leaks, and he would track down the oil leak, and fix a couple other things. I left the GT with him, and he has been on vacation, so this week hopefully everything will get done. Interestingly Bob has worked on Opels before, so I felt better about leaving the GT with him.

So as soon as I get the GT back, I will take pictures of the bracket and the alternator. Bob is going to install both. I wish I could take step by step pictures, but after all these years, I just needed someone else to finish the final touches.

Lindsey, just got the GT back from my buddies mechanic. He fixed the vacuum leaks, oil leaks, installed the universal bracket for the alternator and installed the alternator. Just took the wife to lunch, and it was her first ride in the Opel. My second since it was totally restored. Even got OPEL GT for the license plate. That could only happen in Nevada.

I am posting some pictures of the bracket and alternator. Much smaller than the original and the bracket seems to hold everything in place. I took the pictures, but I am not very happy with them. Couldn't get a good angle to show both the bracket and alternator. I bought the bracket that you recommended on Amazon, got the 70 AMP alternator also on Amazon, The link for it is in one of my posts above, It looks like a winner, if I have any problems, I will post on the forum to keep anyone interested informed.

PJ, I wondered about the charge light, it didn't work. My mechanic is pretty sharp, so I thought maybe he didn't know how to hook it up. I think the small alternator is worth the trade off of the charging light. I have a volt meter installed and it shows 13 volts, so I don't worry. Strange, I put gas in it yesterday and the gas gauge started working. I guess the couple gallons I put in was not enough to register or it was stuck. So the thing that isn't working right now is the oil temperature. I am going to use Charles Goin's procedure for installing a universal wiring kit in the GT. Hopefully it takes care of some of the minor details that don't work now.
