What is needed

to get a stock gt in the low 15's to high 14's in the 1/4 mile. and approx how much hp.

can this be done with stock engine, how much would it cost approx?
or is it cheaper to swap in 6 cyl or 4 w/ turbo?
what else is needed, i know ill need a 5 spd, new rear end and stuff.

- also what kind of engines are possibly? I was thinking maybe a small rotary w/ turbo or something. its lightweight and got a bit of pep

Your opel gt weighs 2300 pounds (with driver) and can complete a 1/4 mile in 14.7 seconds. That means that you've got an estimated 143.11 HP at the wheels, and an estimated 186.04 HP at the flywheel.

that's from an internet HP calculator so it may give you an Idea of how much HP is required

i'm doing around a mid 15 second quarter mile, and virtual dynos only claim me to have 100 give or take a little (depends on what program you use). low comp with 81,000 miles, weber, pertronix, header, electric fan, acell 8MM wires to a set of NGK plugs, and the biggest help of all, a schneider 290H reground cam, .435 lift, .230 @ .050 duration with 110 degree lobe seperation. big thanks to Dave for the cam, and Tom for the weber and pertronix.

to get faster than this, a getrag is a must, my 4 speed is slowly getting ate up badly, but your rear end will more likely than not be fine.

time for dave and bob to chime in on this.

With a 2170 lb Opel Ascona, 139 hp @ the flywheel, and 3.44 rear axle (open diff) I ran a 15.1 @ 93 mph. The mph kinda surprised me, my WRX can supposedly turn a 14.2 @ 94 mph but it has a lot better traction out of the hole. This was my only drag racing experience...I much prefer other forms of racing.

My friend's old circle track Opel had 192 hp and weighed 1980 lbs, and I'd estimate it was a high 12 sec car judging by other cars I've driven....but even with a locked rear 3.44 axle and McCreary 235/60-13 tires it would spin the tires hard all the way through 1st gear (even at 2500 rpms on a roll-on). Don't need much power to make a 2000-2200 lb car go! Just need traction.

ok to start speed is money and how fast you want to go depends on what you want to spend. The last Turbo car would do 13's at bandimere with a 4 speed and seemingly stock rear end. The 2.0 will do 0 to 60 and back at about the same time frame. The 1.9 block can develope alot of power but space limitations are a big issue in a GT. I might be wrong but seems to me somebody was designing a motor to bolt into a GT that would put out somewhere in the low 200s based on a stock block.

ok so I've decided to just use the stock engine and add lets say, new igniiton system, EFI, wider tires, some form of different intake, 2.5" exhaust system and probably tune it to a 2.0L, how much would this cost roughly, and how much for just the engine upgrading.

- thanks

- oh yea i forgot to mention i have a 3spd auto :( a 5 spd must be neccesary for those 1/4 mile times

You haven't mentioned camshaft upgrades, compression increases, or headwork though. Those three items will ultimately affect your HP more than all the other items combined. You also might consider keeping the exhaust down to 2" if you are making under 150 flywheel hp, and possibly going to 2.25" if you're a nearer the 150-160 hp range. A 2.5" system is overkill unless you've got a real high revving 1.9 or 2.0, or a slightly built-up 2.2 or 2.4.

yea dont mind me i no not very much about cars yet.... I got only 1 more question for ya bob, lets say i had $5,000 canadian what could i expect to get/what would you recommend for the engine/transmission,suspension/wheels, i know if i upgrade the eneinge and give it more power i will need bigger wheels for traction and handling as well as suspension but engine/trans are my primary concern right now.
