Possibly a new GT

Well it doesn't matter how many GT's I buy and sell, I always end up running into another along the line, and purchase it LOL. Out in Vassar, about an hour from me, a guy has 3 GT's he is selling. I went and took a look at them, and one is strictly a parts car, one is a "project" that is made up with widened rear fenders, front spoiler, wide rear tires, modified hood, ect.. and the last one is running and driving with a 1.9l motor, 4 Speed tranny, and a turbo that will put out a max of 13 PSI of boost. It has some paint flaking off on the hood, and roof, and a few small bubbles in the normal area's, but is very very solid. It has a re-done dash, newer carpet and headliner, everything as far as electrical goes.. works. The guy wanted 3000 but I have gotten him down to 2500 so far. I have no intentions on keeping any of the cars except for the one that runs and drives.

I forgot to take some pictures, but from the sound of it, does it sound like an alright deal? I know the value is all based on the buyer/seller, but other opinions would be nice :)

Tomarrow I am calling my insurance company and my bank and everything to figure everything out, and HOPEFULLY maybe by like Wensday or so, I could go pick them up. I would drive the best one home, and trailer the other two.

If anyone is interested in a project "strip/street" car, let me know, as I will be selling it basically right after I get it. I will have pictures within a couple days.

I might be interested in the "widened" one (mostly for the wheels if they're decent but I could use a parts car too!).
Sounds like a good deal in the works!

I have yet to see a GT in this part of the country for sale. :banghead: (Not that I could afford one now anyway.)

I know of 2 here in the Jackson area. PM me if you are interested.

For all three? Even though I haven't seen them, it sounds like a great deal to me. The running one should be worth that much by itself, if not more. Jerry

Yeah, IMO opinion it is worth it too. Like I said, it needs a little bit of body work, and new paint.. which I can do both. Figure 300 or so in supplies, depending on the price of the paint I pick. HOPEFULLY by Wensday I can get the cars, or at least pictures. The guy just wants to sell them to someone that has the time and use for them, instead of turning into "part of the earth" as he stated it lol.

They are pretty wide from what I seen. Unsure on the actual size, but I can get you more info if you are interested. Shoot me a PM and let me know what actual parts you are interested in and I'll let you know what and if its available. BTW, I tried sending you a PM earlier and your box was full.

Does the running GT has a custom turbo manifold on it?

I honestly don't remember for sure. From what I CAN remember it has an "aftermarket" exhaust and intake manifold, so chances are it does. It also has a custom made "cold air intake" made from aluminum tubing with a large air filter on the end just a few inches from the front grill.

Wolf Spyder, you're 4 months too late, my new toy won't allow me to afford an Opel anyway until I pay for it.

Well I figure I would update you guys. I purchased the cars today. $2500 for all three. It was an interesting ride home, and since you guys love stories I will tell you it lol.

Well I got there around 6:30 or 7:00, purchased a brand new battery on the way since it didnt have one. When I got there, he poured some gas in the carb and in the tank, and it fired right up after like 3 seconds. It took a couple of tries to get it actually running since it sat for a while. One problem it does have is that it needs some tuning pretty bad. It does not idle for crap. Well I wasnt there too long, and we were on our way home. Cloudy out, but a nice 75 or 80 degree's out. Kept the windows down. First thing we did was stop at a gas station, and after about 20 minutes of actually owning the car, a guy at the gas station goes "Holy ****, is that an Opel GT?? What year is that??" I responded by saying, yes it is, I just purchased it, and it is a 71'. Put a large smile on my face! Well I put 20 bucks in, and headed off after putting some air in the tires, and washing the windows. Well on the trip home, I discovered the brakes wern't working so well. Pulled really bad to the left. So that is my first objective, along with a proper tuning and change of fluids (starting that in the morning). Anyways, I get about 1/2 way home and I start seeing REALLY dark clouds.. oh great. It starts to pour, hard. The wipers work but the blades are shot, so now I'm driving home in the pouring rain, in my new car that doesn't really stop all that well, and stalls everytime I stop at a light. Anyways, I finally get home, and now I can just sit back and finally say its mine! :)

Sooo thats my story. I havn't really had a feel of the turbo, since its not running perfect yet. Anyone have any idea's on why its not idleing? I have to now figure out the few problems, and think of what to get for a vanity plate :)

And to end it all, I believe I have an uncurable case of.. Opelitis! :p

I know how you guys are. I promise, pictures first thing in the morning! It is now dark outside, and I havn't had a chance to give her a bath LOL

Cool, what about the other two? You didn't tow them behind the turbo did you? heheh
I think you did great getting all that for $2500.
What's the badge on the fender say? Turbo?
Painted over the chrome, eh?
Now that Sparky's back in the fold, where are the Michigan guys/girls going to meet? U.P.?

Does it only quit when you are stopping? If so, that, along with your comment about the brakes not working the best is a good pointer that your brake-booster is shot (has a hole in the diaphragm). An easy way to check - pull the vacuum assist line off of the booster, and plug it with something. If that solves the idle problem, you need another booster (or a rebuild). HTH

This is a very good point.

If the turbo is trying to pressurize the brake booster line, it may have ruptured the check valve and the booster diaphragm at the same time (they're not designed for pressure). It depends on how 'throroughly' the car has been engineered.

It may also be an issue with the distributor, since with the vacuum advance/retard system, everything needs to be plumbed differently due to the onset of positive pressure (above atmospheric) in the intake manifold.

Or it could simply be a jetting/fuel pressure issue that was never correctly adjusted.

Let us know how these things are hooked up...pictures always help!

What carb is on it? You're in for a total retune in any event I'm sure, vacuum leaks? I'd dump some Seafoam in the next tank of gas or two or three. I like the wheels. Pretty solid? Anxiously awaiting picture approval.

Well it does not idle the best when just sitting, but does die out more often when stopping. Not sure if its just because it's going back to "idle" when I'm stopping or what. I am going to look into all of this. I purchased new points and plugs because as you all say, I'm sure they could use a change and some tuning. I just went shopping and purchased a bunch of stuff, and when it quits RAINING, things will start to get done. Points, Plugs, Coolant, Oil, Oil Filter, Wiper's..ect. Should I replace the condenser as well? They had one at NAPA but it was special order, and said it would take 2-3 days to recieve, so I have not ordered one yet.

I also ordered my Vanity Plate :) . I went with "OPELGTT" I added the extra T in there for two reasons.. OPELGT was already taken, and I thought about it, and it is an Opel GT Turbo! So yea, the extra T stands for turbo haha. Suprisingly there wasn't many choices that wernt taken, so there has to be a few more Opels out there in MI that we don't know about.

(they're not designed for pressure).
I hadn't thought of that - it never even occured to me. How does the "vacuum" line assist the brake booster with a turbo? I guess you'd have to move it to the air intake for the turbo...

Hey, that looks as if it has a straight throtle body instead of a carb - that would answer the question of how it was able to run so much boost (without making the carb do really weird things) - no carb.

Still looks like a carb to me, just has a 'hood' over it to seal the inlet. Problem is most carbs were never meant to be pressurized either. The power valve probably doesn't work at all any more, when vacuum drops the valve opens, but under pressure the diaphragm will rupture. Also at modest boost levels, the pressure will shut off fuel flow unless there is a rising rate regulator. That is, if the fuel pressure is 3.5 psi, and the boost pressure is 3.5 psi...the fuel pressure stops.

The brake booster vacuum line will see vacuum under normal (light) use, and will store a certain amount of vacuum for future stops. But, under heavy throttle the vacuum goes to positive pressure. So no more vacuum source for the brakes. The brake booster hose could get plumbed to the turbo inlet, or better still, just get an inline check valve from a factory turbocharged engine (manufacturer doesn't matter, as long as it fits and is rated for boost)

Oops. I had read this:
the last one is running and driving with a 1.9l motor, 4 Speed tranny, and a turbo that will put out a max of 13 PSI of boost.
as "it's currently running at 13psi boost". I was thinking "How in the world would a Carb be able to run having 13 psi shoved down it's throught?" - hence, the thought it was a throtle body. Surprisingly, this isn't the first time I've been wrong:yup:

What pressure boost is it running?

I need some help finding tires. The only ones I have found so far will be close to 400 dollars at a local store, and I need something inexpensive. Anyknow where to get, and how much it would be for some 205/60-13's?

Falken still makes the ZIEX 502 series in a 205/60 R13. Your just gonna have to call around and find them.
