Opel CIH/16V mit Zahnriementrieb - Rennsportteile - MotorsportMarkt.de
I noticed they seem to be using the standard 2.0L crank. With all the work they should have a billet lightweight crank. When I searched for billet Opel cranks I found a Chinese site that offers to make them for $1600 each with a minimum five order. From other reviews I read about various V8 cranks being offered in the States, the Chinese cranks are good material-wise but often have to be resized and sometimes straightened. So as long as you account for the re-sizing of the journals when spec'ing the dimensions it might be worth considering.

Watch a billet crank being made

I think the date of that add is 2016
do you think its still for sale?
not that I have the money anyways ($15K?)
It mentions in the ad that it is sold already.

Great video. I can't believe the cutter speeds and feed speeds for some operations without using coolant. I worked in a tool and die shop in my first year out of high school, and operated a lathe, and milling machine, and if my boss would have seen me taking cuts like that he would have kicked my rear. I do remember some of those searing hot chips finding there way down the neck of my shirt and sticking to my chest though.

I have my 24v motor apart right now and compared the head and timing chain cover to the CIH's. (BTW, I have not looked at the links above)

Issues quickly noticed:

  1. Oil delivery to head
24v uses a completely different system and passages
  2. Timing cover
24v mounting holes are different as is the oil passage.
  3. Head gasket
Cooling passages are different and a couple of head bolt holes do not line up.
  4. Distributer
The 24v dizzy is needed to drive the oil pump

Gary, all the modifications are well documented to convert the 4 cylinder block. Since you have the engine apart, inspect the timing chain guides as they are a known problem. If they are cracked, replace them. They are no longer serviced by Opel (for years). Risse is the only ones to have both guides that I found, and the kit is 964 Euros. Similar kits for other engines are typically less than 200.

The chain guides are shot. I have a set on order from another source. The chains themselves cross over to ones from a Porsche 944 and a BMW.

I have the head and most the bits needed off a 3.0L coming in the next few weeks.

I was thinking of using it for my future project. But if someone is interested and got the skills.

I will sell it pretty cheap.

1) on the side of the opel 6 cyl block is the oil feed to the head as far as I can tell

Image

in the block you can see a ball bearing and a spring so that is the anti-drain back function
the factory oil pressure is 43.5 to 50.76

1b) the motor uses hydraulic buckets so in stock form you don't need shims (don't know the rpm limit for the stock buckets but they have non hyd ones)

Gary-- warning! this book I have says remove grub screw and prime the timing chain tensioner by pumping it full of oil

this place had a lot of the stuff needed (at least back in 2015 they did)

If there is anything you need that I can try to get let me know.

I promised a full kit of everything.

When the Senator gets here it will have the Dizzy that was missing, and Rav thinks he found a useable set of used pads in the trunk for you.

If you find there are parts from some other motor that we can get in europe to help let me know.

Also we will have a second one of these sets coming over ( without the guides.. ) if someone else is wanting to take the challenge themselves.
